Pens putting Crosby, Malkin on same line

08:48 AM ET 10.18 | Playing Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin together is Michel Therrien's nuclear option, the one he breaks out only in the most dire of circumstances. He puts his two best players on the same line only when the Penguins are desperate for offense, usually because they're in imminent danger of losing a game. That's not the case now. Not exactly, anyway. The danger now is that if the Penguins (2-2-1) don't begin to generate some even-strength goals, they might lose lots of games. They enter the game tonight against Toronto at 7:08 at Mellon Arena with just one five-on-five goal -- courtesy of fourth-line center Mike Zigomanis -- in their past four games, during which time they are 1-2-1. So Therrien has opted to unite Crosby, Malkin and left winger Pascal Dupuis while reconfiguring the rest of his forward combinations in the process.

Therrien is shaking up all the lines. Considering the Boys of Winter only have one 5 on 5 goal in their last 4 and they keep losing leads in games, maybe...just maybe this isn't a bad move. The proof will be in the pudding though.

MMMMMM....pudding

Remember its only the beginning of the season. So you do put Crosby and Malkin together, now what happens to those other lines. Good idea if you are trying to get Crosby and Malkin jump started and ready to produce. I see this as a good idea, but it can also lead to trouble with not enough offense on the other lines...

Agreed Mikie Richards

October 18, 2008  11:06 AM ET

No question they're playing below their expectations. Nothing wrong is shaking the lines up.

October 18, 2008  12:28 PM ET

Hmmmm. That should prove to be interesting. I think it might challenge both of them to do better and feed of each other, at least in the short term.

Sid and Geno don't have chemistry together. Putting them on the same line is stupid. The problem is that the Pens D is awful with Gonchar and Whitney out. When your front lines keep having to play defense it makes it hard to get any offense going. Also it takes a while for new players to mesh on the lines.

gonchar and whitney.

Good point. But, not an excuse...world class talent still has to execute.

we are going to be hurting after giving up so much in the Hossa trade

October 18, 2008  05:12 PM ET

The pens really need to trade for Gaborik and soon

Exactly.

It's simple: trade Jordan Staal

October 18, 2008  08:48 PM ET

Trading for Gabby will end the same as with the Hossa trade. They could afford to sign Hossa last year, but I dont think they'll have the cash to sign Gabby after the signings over the summer. I would like to see Gabby in a Pens jersey, but to trade Staal for him won't end good. I think Staal could be signed for 3 years at 3 to 4 million in the offseason. Gabby probably won't go for less than 8 million. I think trying to sign Gabby would hurt the Pens more than it would help.

I see where your coming from but this is the way I think about it: Satan 3.5 million, Fedetenko 2.5 million, Sydor 2.5 million, thats 8.5 million of the salary cap right there.

October 18, 2008  09:34 PM ET

so far so good. Crosby 1 goal 3 assists.

What's a cure for a scoring slump?

Play the Maple Leafs.

I get what your saying, but I think they need to be alittle more balanced through out the lines. They still have Sarge for two more years at 5 million. By signing Satan seems to be clicking alittle now. They maybe able to sign him for a couple of years at a decent price yet. It doesn't seem like Tank will be here next year if he doesn't step it up soon. Sydor will be gone before years end. I don't see him sticking around once Sarge and Whitney get back. I just see it as more hurtful cap wise to have that many high priced players on the team.

I know but I really think Shero needs to get a better winger to play with Crosby than Satan, Hossa could make things happen with out crosby starting them and it really dosent seem like Satan can do that but I know Gaborik can but thats just my opinon and I could be entirely wrong

I'm willing to give the new wingers time to mesh with the Pens. It's stupid to really hold any meaning on much of anything this early in the season. Does anyone think the Rangers are as good as their record suggests? Or the Red Wings are as bad as theirs suggests? I think we really need to wait about 20 games before we will have an idea as to how the season is going along for the entire league.

And on top of that woo Pens!!!
