A&M coach to fans: 'Don't quit on us'

Mike Sherman still has faith that this will not be a lost season, and he's doing his best to spread his positive vibes across Aggieland. Texas A&M's first-year coach told his players two weeks ago that "something special" was going to happen to them this season. On Friday, Sherman took his message to the 12th Man. In a lengthy column in The Battalion, the school's student newspaper, Sherman took responsibility for the team's disappointing 2-4 start and said it is time to turn things around after "five years of mediocrity. "I know you all had such high hopes for us and we have not met your expectations thus far," he wrote. "But I appeal to the 12th Man to not give up hope. Aggies do not quit, so please do not quit on us."

To late they already did.

Sherman needs to grow a pair real quick. Even a first year coach should realize that the fans don't give up on thier team, they give up on the coach. He will be given time to prove himself, if he really wants that 12th man on his side, have the team prepared, play with intensity and show that the program is heading in the right direction. After five years of mediocrity they aren't going to throw in the towel after a 2-4 start under a new coach, Aggie fans are smarter than that.

I'm not a big fan of the Aggies, but I do believe that their fans are smart enough to know you can't right a sinking ship in one season. The administration at A&M did a nice job in getting someone of Sherman's caliber to coach them. That program has all of the resources and fan/booster support they need to rise up again. As I said, I'm not a particularly big Aggies fan, but I certainly know what it's like to see your once great program struggle, so good luck to A&M and their 12th Man.

I agree it's just like RickRod at Big Blue.

Hansen's comments are childish and demeaning to a first-year coach who inherited a painfully thin defense. That said, the Ag's are gonna get creamed during this second half of the season. They might be able to pull off a win against Iowa State on the road, but that's problematic. I don't see much improvement until Sherman's recruits develop during late years two and three, but it is unfair to degrade a school, its students and traditions based on the quality of its football team.

I think A&M has a big challenge because the Big 12 is so deep. It's not like the old SWC days, when Texas, A&M, and Arkansas were top dogs. Now there's OU, Mizzou, Tech (gasp), and OSU--as well as Texas--who can offer recruits a much greater chance of winning. If you're willing to go as far as Kansas, that's a promising option, too. And there's always Nebraska, which has tons of history and a whole state full of fans to adore you. If you're mediocre, why not Colorado? Ski more in one semester than you have in a lifetime! College Station gives you nice fans who will stick with you through anything and who will worship you if you beat Texas. But is that enough?

eyesWideopen, I can't beleive you used "aggie fans" and "smart" in the same sentence. I hope they do win a game or two. Just watch em. Win a few football games and aggies think their King Kong.

I'm kind of surprised that A&M battled T-Tech so tough last week, I thought it would be a blowout before halftime. Having said that if I were an Aggies fan I would not be too confident that they are going to right the ship in a quick manner.

The reason more teams are going away from pro-set offenses in college is because it takes a higher level of personnel that what most programs get. The spread is the great equalizer and almost all Big 12 teams run it. It will be hard I think to get good recruits to play in College Station with that offense IMO...

This is still a program very much in disarray! Contrast that with what's been happening with a new coach in Lincoln. Bo Pelini already has the program going in the right direction. Yes there is a long ways to go but the Huskers will make a bowl game and have a winning season. I doubt Nebr has that much better players than A&M has right now. It's all in the coaching and getting players to buy into the system. I don't believe Sherman was the right hire much the same as Callahan wasn't for Nebr. Only time well tell how things shake out for A&M.............

Talk about a great setup for tons of "Aggie Jokes!!

I didn't know Aggie had the ability to use a computer. I thought all they taught you at Aggie is the difference between sheep and cattle, and how not to impregnate your Aggie cousins.

And Aggie has male cheerleaders.............................................................. gross!
