Red Sox top Lowe's list

Derek Lowe is putting Boston first on his list of preferred destinations now that he's a free agent. Lowe told this reporter that while money is important, he wants to go to a quality organization committed to winning, and no organization, in his mind, fits that description better than Boston. Would the Red Sox be interested? That's what Lowe doesn't know. He left Boston after the 2004 season to sign a four-year, $36 million deal with the Dodgers. Off-the-field issues were a big factor in the Red Sox making a tough decision to part ways after he won three clinching games in the postseason that year. The Yankees, Mets, Tigers, Indians, Cardinals, Cubs, Angels, Braves, Phillies, Rangers, Astros, and Blue Jays are all said to be very interested in Lowe. Lowe is represented by Scott Boras and said he will direct Boras on what's most important to him in the next few days when they meet in Los Angeles.

Welcome back, Derek!

I dion't know, I think he'd look good in Phillies pinstripes; they're a young team with lots of upside.

Lowe sucked in his last 2 years with the Red Sox. He had decent numbers in the past four years because he was pitching in the NL. If I was him, I would take less money and stay in the NL. The Red Sox nation don't want him back but we would welcome his reporter mistress into the NESN crew though. =P

All the Sox are looking for would be a #4 or #5 starter. Right now, Buchholz, Masterson, Bowden, Wakefield and Byrd would be vying for the positions behind Lester, Matsuzaka and Beckett. I'm not sure the money he would be looking for is worth it to spend on a #4 or #5 starter.

We have Wakefield and Masterson behind the big three, so I don't think he'd be worth the money. He was one of my favorite pitchers while he played for Boston, but I don't think he's got AL stuff.

The Cards are interested, but I bet Boras prices him out of the Cardinal's interest.

Sox always look like they have more than enough pitching, then by the end of the season they have to pick up so-so guys like Byrd to fill in to replace the Schillings and Buchholz's and whoever else doesn't make it through the season.

Even if Beckett can stay healthy next year, Matsusaka still has huge holes in his game and could easily be .500 this year with all the walks. Schilling and his big mouth --mercifully-- will be gone. Who knows whether Buchholz is the next Lester or Craig Hanson. Wakefield will always be trick or treat. Byrd is a #6 starter if you get my drift. Bowden is still an unknown. Is Okajima the September/October guy or the May - August guy? Will Delcarmen ever live up to his stuff? Timlin is dead man pitching. Can Masterson be a starter or will they have to keep him in the set-up spot.

Money is not a Sox problem. Take Lowe and put him into the mix. The guy has learned how to pitch and would be great insurance.

The Red Sox should go hard after CC and explore trade possibilitys and if there is nothing there then they should try to get lowe.

But try to sign him for a 1 or 2 year deal so if he is horrible like he was before with Boston it will be a short stay and not hurt them as much

October 19, 2008  03:21 PM ET

And as long as we don't get gagne back we will be amazing again

October 19, 2008  03:36 PM ET

New york, New York.. The Mets need him more than the Red Sox do.. They have a superior rotation & a wunderkind in Buchholz.. Why would Theo spend extra money when they are on the precifice of the World Series? & will beat the PHreakin Phillies.. I loathe Victorino..

I think Lowe was bad in Boston because of the weak infield defense. Sinker-ball pitchers rely on solid infield defense. I would welcome Lowe back as #4 or #5 ..Long relief cuz we don't know how much longer Wakefiel can go a full season. Lowe would be able to pick up the slack from July to August so we can rest our #1 to#4 starters for 2 weeks at a time in the heat of the summer as we have been doing latelty ( you really think we always lose a starter for July/August)

October 19, 2008  05:05 PM ET

As well as he's been pitching for the Dodgers, as much as the Sox infield defense has improved, as much as I wouldn;t mind seeing him back with the Sox next year, Scott Bora$$hole will want too much money for him. That and he will turn 36 yo mid-season next year.

Lowe would be great in a city where he doesn't have to be the No. 1. He'd be a super No. 3 option.

October 19, 2008  05:14 PM ET

I thought he left Boston on bad terms...he didnt like management and they didnt like him. So, why would they want him back?

That's why he'd be a good fit in STL. They already have Wainwright, Carpenter and Lohse ti fill the first three spots.

Stay in the NL, Derek. You'll look better there. At this stage of your career, the AL East will eat you alive.

But thanks for 2004! You will always be remembered.
