Brewers to make run at Peavy

The Braves are pushing hard to land San Diego ace Jake Peavy (Atlanta shortstop Yunel Escobar would have to be included in a deal), but if you're looking for a sleeper for Peavy, a few people are keeping their eye on Milwaukee, which will likely lose CC Sabathia, and possibly the oft-injured Ben Sheets. Milwaukee makes sense, considering the Padres want a shortstop and the Brewers would move J.J. Hardy in the right situation. Peavy has indicated he would prefer to pitch in the National League and can control things with his no-trade clause. He's listing Atlanta, Houston, St. Louis, Los Angeles, and Chicago as preferences, but Milwaukee wouldn't be a hard sell. This hasn't stopped the Yankees from being involved, and it may not stop the Red Sox from making inquiries.

So every year the Brewers will trade away their future for a rent-a-pitcher?

Magic 8 Ball says the Brewers will be the wild card again and flame out in the first round of the playoffs.

Well Obama, this is the first5 thing out of your mouth (politics or sports) that I agree with. However J.J. Hardy's possible departure does not constitute 'trading' their future. Rumor has it that Khalil Greene was looking to be packaged with Peavy, so it may be a multi-player deal and thus they wouldn't lose anything. How is Peavy a future-rent-a-pitcher? Is he only looking for a one or two year deal?

Let's see: Florida, Alaska, Mississippi, Georgia, ya'll can have California, too. Hmmmm, okay and Texas, NJ and Ohio. That is it. Now behave!

The last time I checked, the Brewers play in Milwaukee which is not an attractive option for most players

I highly doubt the Brewers would give away for Hardy for Greene as part of this big package possibility looking at Greene's rough offensive season in 2008.

A bottle of kessler...how do I get in on a bet like that?!?!:)))

Aaaargh, you drink that stuff too, right? I told him if he accepted my friend invite I'd give him a bottle, he accepted saying something to the effect that I shouldn't dangle that cherished inebriant in front of his cirrhosed liver like that! lol

Truth be told, I've never seen this mythical potable --is it regional? (I live outside Chicago)

It won't be for Peavey either once he see's the mass exodus of players out of Milwaukee!

October 19, 2008  11:57 AM ET

If you notice..there is a reason that the Brewers are not on Peavy's list. he does not want to play for a "pretender" wild card team.

October 19, 2008  11:59 AM ET

Come on Karate Kid, mass exodous? They have the best young hitter in baseball locked up for 7 more years (Braun), one of the leagues top young starters (Gillardo), a double A team that produced 10...10 minor league all-stars, including the top rated shortstop in the minors, Escobar...top rated catcher, Salome, and future first base prospect Matt Gammel, all they did was hit on average .330, 80 RBI, and Escobar stole 49 bases! Yeah they're going to lose a oft-injured Sheets, but ESPN has reported that they will be the dark-horse in the CC sweepstakes, haveing stockpiled $110-115 million to offer. If Peavy is serious about a postseason run, he could do a lot worse than Milwaukee.

October 19, 2008  12:29 PM ET

Kessler.... ughhh... people drink that chyte like water here in WI... just plain nast.

I will say this, the brewers would be dumb to trade JJ for Peavy... They have a lot of good young pitchers that are coming back and could find a better pitcher that would cost them less. Plus if they did make this trade they would lose half of the fans... as all the women would have killed themselves... it is crazy how much they swoon for that guy here.

Peavy is rarely on the DL. Get your facts straight. He's usually a workhorse, and one of the best pitchers in baseball. Any team in the league would benefit from his presence.
