Chiefs tried to trade Johnson

If Kolby Smith can run like he did in his first career start last year against the Raiders or if Jamaal Charles can break loose with the first big game of his pro career, it would pose some interesting questions for the Chiefs. Just how valuable would Larry Johnson be, really? Might they get as much yardage from a Smith-Charles tandem, without the headaches that Johnson frequently has provided? The Chiefs seem interested in finding the answers. Coach Herm Edwards decided to sit Johnson for today's game because the running back has been late for meetings and other team functions. The Chiefs also looked to trade Johnson before last week's deadline but couldn't find serious interest. For his part, Johnson has questioned his value to the Chiefs in the offensive system of first-year coordinator Chan Gailey. Miffed at being removed from the game on third downs and for other crucial plays, Johnson also suggested he was being phased out of the Chiefs' plans.

Ever since he had over 400 carries he hasn't been the same

Trade that contract? Good luck with that one.

bengals could use him, but mike brown would drop dead before accepting that contract. shame that couldn't happen.

The number of Chiefs players who could start elsewhere in the NFL:

Brian Waters (will retire after this season)
Tony G. (will retire or be traded after this season)
LJ (attempted to be traded, and will probably traded or cut after season)
Derrick Johnson (may leave after rookie contract is up in 2009)
Donnie Edwards (will retire after season)
Bowe
Flowers (rookie with promise)
Albert (rookie with promise)
Colquitt (excellent punter)

By my count, after this season, the Chiefs will have only five NFL worthy players.

Who still believes this "rebuilding" lie?

Someone should have at least made an offer. Probably not have been the offer the Chiefs would have been looking for, though.

This guy is on the Shaun Alexander Worthless List.

Why would they let Larry go? Any K.C. chick will tell you you can never have too much Johnson!

What are you talkin about? KC girls are too busy being beat up by Johnson. He has 3 assault charges on him from women. I agree with PW, he would be the perfect fit in Cincy.

I hope not, this will kill my team.

October 19, 2008  03:53 PM ET

just trade him

I wouldn't judge Kolby Smith or Charles' ability to run the ball based on a game vs. the Raiders. Let them put together several good games and then talk about trading LJ. Otherwise you could have a pair of duds and no outlet for your QB to get relief from the rush.

Trade LJ to the Raiders they would take any bad contract: DeAngelo Hall, JaMarcus Russell, Javon Walker, Derrick Burgess, Michael Huff, etc.... Trade LJ & Carl Peterson @ the same time, both are just wastes of air.

Ive never understood why so few trades happen during the deadline. TGonzo should have been dealt, the Vikes definitely should have dealt for a QB, and LJ should have been dealt. I don't think LJ stinks, i just think he's screwed playing in KC. NO QB, no OL, just TGonzo, Bowe, and you and nothing else to speak of. Nobody produces on offense if the OL isnt worth a damn and the QB's are even worse then the collection the Vikes trot out.

There are so few trades due to a) contracts, and b) the playbook. In other sports like baseball, it is easy since there is no cap and every team does the same thing.

Like Dick Vermeil said, this guy is a baby. The Chiefs should have let him move on because he never had the mentality to be a rock for the team (I said it when they gave him an extension). I think he loves what the NFL has done for him, and thats it. He is good enough to shine for a few years, but he will never be a great back like an Emitt Smith or Priest Holmes for that matter. Do your job, make your opinions known, and shut up. If you don't agree fundamentally how the organization is being run, move on-take a pay cut if you have to. I think Johnson is all about himself and when everything is said and done, no one will remember him for anything. Remember how he played in playoff games? Weak character and not a big game running back.

Braylon Edwards is in the same category.
