Will Brewers give Macha second chance?

05:35 AM ET 10.20 | A source said Ken Macha already had interviewed for the Brewers job. He can't be discounted because he was Doug Melvin's original choice before the 2003 season but turned down the offer to manage the Oakland A's, resulting in Ned Yost being hired. If Melvin tried to hire Macha once, he might try to do it again. Macha certainly qualifies as "successful," having posted four winning seasons with Oakland, including two division titles. But Macha was perceived by some as a puppet of general manager Billy Beane and was eventually dumped for losing the clubhouse. Those who knew Macha during his coaching days have good things to say about him. But reporters who covered the Oakland teams he managed said Macha alienated players by failing to communicate with them, including catcher Jason Kendall, who now is a big presence in the Brewers' clubhouse. If Melvin hears the same things, it might cool his interest in Macha, who spent this year doing regional TV broadcasts for the Boston Red Sox.
