Red Sox discuss bidding on Teixeira

The Red Sox need a bat. And a big one. According to a team source, the Red Sox already have had some internal discussion about free-agent-to-be Mark Teixeira, the most desirable hitter available on the open market and a player for which the bidding will be fierce. Coupled with the strength of Boston's player development system, the real benefit of Manny Ramirez's departure is that the Red Sox will have a truckload of money to spend this winter. All signs point to a spirited run at Teixeira, a switch-hitting, slugging first baseman with the good defensive skills, exceptional baseball acumen, and the kind of discretionary plate discipline that Sox officials so covet. The obvious question is where they will put him.

For sure. If they don't they be stupid.

Don't worry, they'll find room for him, if it goes down.

Yep, this will be a good pick. And they can make some room for him in first base.

It would likely mean that Lowell or Youk will go.... Papi is the DH. Wonder who will be traded or leave.

Red Sox sacrificed their season when they traded Manny. Too late to be bringing in Tex now. 2008 will be remembered as the one that got away for Sox fans.

How many times have we seen the most coveted player in the off season turn into a major bust during his next season with a new team? Then again.....

If they didn't let Manny go, there would be a lot of drama all the way to the postseason. Manny is history, next year would be great. Mike Lowell, Beckett and Drew will be healthy. They might even acquire a big free agent this offseason. With all the injuries and the drama in 2008, I would still say its a good year for the Sox...

i don't think the sox should acquire this guy. they already have a full infield. cora makes a reliable backup. the sox need to start think about getting some good pitching. the depth of this staff simply doesn't cut it.

As a BoSox fan, I think we can find a much better power hitter. Tex was a bust in Atlanta. He put up good numbers when he was with the Rangers but was nothing more than an average hitter, at best, while with the Braves. Let's find somebody else......

Lester, Beckett, Matsuzaka are in the TOP tier of starting pitchers, and then you throw in Delcarmen, Masterson, Okajima, Papelbon out of the 'pen...and we dont have depth?? How about the ever revolving door of prospects the Sox have in the minors, waiting to be the next Lester or Masterson. I strongly disagree that we need more pitching, perhaps maybe a #4 starter if that...but Tex will be needed in our lineup to make the Sox a bonafide conteneder, offensively and defensively.

Bring on Mark Teixeira!!!Sox will re-load for another run in 2009.....

Does it trouble you at all that your team runs around buying up all the big free agents?
