Hart tries to explain 'little brother' jab

The Spartans had a shot to end their losing skid in the rivalry last year, leading by 10 points midway through the fourth quarter only to lose, 28-24, and hear Michigan senior running back Mike Hart rub it in. "Sometimes, you get your little brother excited when you're playing basketball -- let them get the lead," Hart said during the postgame news conference. "And then you come back." Hart, who had a season-ending knee injury this year with the Indianapolis Colts, said he might be at the Big House to watch the 101st Michigan-Michigan State game this weekend. "It might be dangerous for me with all the Spartans there," Hart joked in a telephone interview with the Associated Press. "I referred to them as little brothers because I had heard them say in different clips, 'We're not Michigan's little brother,' so I was just saying what they had been saying."

This isn't even a story, just another alumni poking fun at a rivalry game between two in-house state schools.

DEVO, the comment came last year.

The fact that MSU gets so upset must mean that they feel there is some truth, or perceived truth there. It would take MSU a whole lot to ever eclipse Michigan football.

Its a funny comment, nothing more, nothing less.

It's a comment typical of a rivalry game. Nothing more to read into then that.

Shoot! That's the worst thing a Michigan player has to say about MSU? That's damn near a compliment! We used to get ABUSED by Florida fans, players, and COACHES (Steve Spurrier), until we kicked their butts a few times...now it's just your run-of-the-mill insults. Don't like being called "little brother"? Only one sure way to stop that kind of talk...Beat 'Em!!!

That comment is not as good as his comment about Jim Harbaugh. Harbaugh said that Michigan athletes did not have to take as rigorous courses as the other students so hart said.."he said that? He's not a Michigan man, I wish he would have never played here."

Think about it. The comment, even if condecending, is pretty much true. Michigan is up big in the series, 33-19-2. Yes, Michigan will probably lose, but here it's like a little brother playing against an older brother who has just been Tanya Harding-ed in the knee. Next year or the following things will return to their proper places in the universe.

I agree wholeheartedly, MSU would have to do incredulous things to surpass Big Blue in football.

He shouldn't have to explain it at all. Since when is ribbing like that politically incorrect? It wasn't racial, and I don't think he referred to MSU as "that one".

I'm not sure how apt the Tanya Harding reference is, but its funny.

MSU is a good program, building it the right way. They deserve to have a better season than they had last year. Coach D is a class act, and is doing it the right way. I really think he is the right guy for the job, but I worry that if UM does pull it off somehow this year, it might look like the wheels are coming off again, and the green faithful may start questioning the coach...

I agree it's not that big a deal. But I would point out that Hart's mouth has always written checks that his body couldn't cash.

He cashed those checks in college and MSU has

It's funny, for all the arrogance of Michigan fans, and all the wins the Wolverines have earned over the years, they're still tied with Michigan State in number of actual national championships. Who cares? These two are fighting for a spot in the Insignificant Bowl, right?

No - just 1 of the teams, the best that can be saif for the other is that they have yet to be mathematically eliminated...

It is Hart. His mouth frequently wrote checks his team couldn't cash. Who cares?

October 22, 2008  02:08 PM ET

He cashed those checks against state...but not the big game

Don't forget Coach D at Michigan State started the whole smack talk last year after somebody asked him what he though about UM losing to Applachian State to which he replied (very flippantly), "What should we do, have a moment of silence?" That came back to haunt him...UM players actually gathered for a moment of silence at the end of the game after they beat Sparty. Just another in the long line of trash talking between the two rivals.

As for Mike Hart.....I am a huge U-M fan, but never much cared for Hart's mouth or attutude. 0-4 against Ohio State is all that really matters.
