Can Eli fix Plaxico-Coughlin feud?

It is now up to Eli Manning to fix the Plaxico Burress problem. Tom Coughlin and the Giants made the bed they now sleep in with Burress when they rewarded him for his 2007 championship season with that five-year, $35 million deal at the start of this season, all the better to pay all the latest fines he deserves to draw from the league for criticizing its officials, and from the team for showing up its head coach. The Giants decided they would be willing to turn into Big Blue ostriches from Monday through Saturday just so Manning could have his go-to guy on Sunday. Lawrence Taylor had a drug problem, but was Superman on Sundays. Burress doesn't have a drug problem. He has an authority problem, specifically a head coach problem. But if that recent one-game suspension has fallen on Burress' deaf ears, the Giants' only hope for a Super Bowl repeat depends on whether Manning can reach Burress. Burress, for all his immature warts, is not a quarterback-killer, the way Terrell Owens has been. It's more important that he likes and respects his quarterback, and listens to him. Remember, he signed here in part to play with Manning. "We have a great relationship," Manning said yesterday.

At this point I think the NY Press is making more out of this than is there. Have to see how Burress goes about his business the next few weeks. Coaches and players exchanging comments during a game is common fare in pro sports. Maybe I am wrong. I do know this, Coughlin has more chips to lay on the table than Burress does. He should think twice about raising the ante.

Between 2007 and 2008 Plaxico Burress has accounted for 15 of Eli Manning's 31 TD's, not to mention the final TD vs the Pats in the last Super Bowl. I know the Giants came out and stomped the Seahawks 44-6 during Plaxico's one-game suspension. But the key word there is "Seahawks". Eli needs his safety net if the G-Men plan to repeat.

October 21, 2008  06:22 AM ET

Well...if Eli cannot, I know someone who can......Morris. That's right that Giants insider can bring these two sides together and get them back on the same page.

October 21, 2008  06:28 AM ET

Eli? I doubt it. He doesn't seem like the guy that want to get into a confrontation.

Sounds like the same thing that Dallas had to go through with the TO business these past two years. Sucks when it's your team, doesn't it and everyone is making something out of nothing?

October 21, 2008  07:45 AM ET

Perhaps they should have swapped receivers with Detroit and taken Williams [Roy] away from Dallas. Burress would be a perfect fit in Detroit. He could be left to rot on a none playoff bound team.

October 21, 2008  07:55 AM ET

HOOAH05!..i thought the same thing. TO has done nothing but play well and keep his nose clean, but it does not seem to matter. Burress has more issues than TO ( think his personal life is getting to him).
Lost in it all is the fact it was a bad call by an official. ( Troy Aikman covered the call very well during the game). Ironic. An official makes a bad call, the player gets upset, the team loses fifty yards in field position from the catch and the flag on Burress, and the official will get a memo telling him not to call it that way again.
That is the story here to me. Officials are changing the game. How? By not calling someof the flagrant holding going on by OL defensive lineman are getting more flags for stuff after the play. DBs have no clue what is and is not allowed and on and on. Sometimes you can drill a QB and sometimes you cannot go near him. I think you will see more and more flags for stuff after the play is over as players try to get even on their own...

I would love to post something negative about this situation, but can't. The Giants still look like the team to beat in the NFC East.

How is Eli going to fix anything? Do put it politely he's just a ****

October 21, 2008  08:47 AM ET

yeah that vocal leader Eli will step up and tell these two to cool their heels, yep that happens right after the bengals win the superbowl this year.

You may be slightly right, but over all would say your comment reflects shallowness.

I love the TO QB killer in the article. Also, he was po'd about a non call and most likely this is a non issue. I couldnt live under a microscope. Tom will straighten him out.

And still way too quick to pull the trigger on the DBacks. Not everything is defensive interference. That has got to stop.

He doesn't have to get in the faces of the players just has to show leadership which he is doing this year. Some players, like Plaxico, TO, etc, just don't listen however, and, when their feelings get hurt, they get vocal.

October 21, 2008  09:26 AM ET

well the specific play this last sunday, may have just been in part to miscommunication between plax and coughlin. Coughlin may not have gotten a good look at the play, but us on TV when we saw the replay many times over saw that there wasn't any sort of offensive interference. And as a player plax knew he didn't either, i mean if i know i am pushing or holding a DB I as a player will know. So when Coughlin basically did the "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" he may not have seen the play fully so it warranted a Plaxico "**** OFF" cause plax was angry enough that the refs got the call wrong and didn't need another mouth questioning an already blown play. Non-issue when they look at the tape.

October 21, 2008  10:07 AM ET

No feud exist...

October 21, 2008  10:13 AM ET

I am not sure it is Eli's job. I am not even sure it needs to be addressed unless Plax continues to do it. These guys, T O included want to win and contribute. I would rather have them vent on the sidelines to players and coaches, then say anything to the officials. Funny how in baseball you can get in the face of the umps, but do it in others sports, it's a T or a flag. Tough part of the schedule coming, actually it's very tough

October 21, 2008  10:33 AM ET

TO was just poed about a bad call on him, and it was a very bad call.

October 21, 2008  10:33 AM ET

TO=Plax, freudian slip? maybe...

October 21, 2008  11:21 AM ET

Plaxico has talent and, unfortunately, he knows it. I can't believe his attitude. It's not the attitude of a winner by any means. Too bad because the Giants could have been good this season. They'll make the playoffs but won't repeat as champs.
