Lowe leaving out Yankees?

Rumors of a Derek Lowe-to-Yankees move this offseason started before the Dodgers were even eliminated from the playoffs. However, a recent article in The Boston Globe suggests Derek Lowe has the Boston Red Sox atop his list of places of interest. Lowe played with the Red Sox in the past, leaving in 2004 for the now expired contract in Los Angeles. The Boston Globe has this to say: Lowe told this reporter that while money is important, he wants to go to a quality organization committed to winning, and no organization, in his mind, fits that description better than Boston. Apparently Los Angeles is not entirely out of the question either, as Lowe will meet once again with Joe Torre to discuss a future role with the club.

feeling nostalgia now, derek lowe to join beckett, dice-k, lester in the pitching rotation will be nice. This could be a good addition, but maybe the sox can make a run at peavy instead.

Who cares?

It's not as if Lowe is in his prime. Bring back Schilling too, and the Sox can take another step backward.

That would be so sweet. For Yankee fans.

Derek Lowe can still get it done.. he's not gonna be the top guy obviously but as your #3 or #4 starter, he's a good option.

Well, if he can pull off another playoff performance like he did with the Dodgers this year, I say go to the Sox! Those four guys, and, God willing, Wakefield as well, with their combined playoff chokes, will make a Red Sox playoff lineup any Yankee fan can love.

The jealousy of Yankee fans of Red Sox nation has now reached the point of obsession.

Hmmm. Looking at Atro's comment, I see no jealousy, just a reasonably fair assesment of the Red Sox pitching staff's performance in the playoffs this year. Any mature and informed Sox fan would have to agree.

Dan, on the other hand, reads like a straight up idiot. Apparently they don't get any smarter the further north of Boston you go.

Sorry Faith. But if I recall correctly, last time we did the hippity-hop it was in New Hampshire, right? My distaste is limited to Boston proper and points north, but only so far as the border.

You know I dig you, baby.

I would have figured you dug me all the time ... I'm one of a very small group of FN members without the ability to ring a cow bell.

Give him credit actually. Apparently loyalty does exist for some players. This is a guy who never wanted to leave Boston and even though the Yanks might offer the most money he knows the rivalry and doesn't look like he would cross enemy lines the way Damon, Boggs, Wells all did.

October 22, 2008  09:29 AM ET

Anyone else notice that the Dodgers are fast becoming Boston West Coast? All they need is Papi or Pedro to really solidify it. They already have Lowe, Nomar, Manny.

It's Atro's comments over time.

I would hardly call the Sox pitchers chokers. The Rays beat the Sox. They earned it. The starting pitching/bullpen did not give it to them.

I may read like a straight up idiot (whatever that is), but you are one.

I wouldn't cal them chokers either. Lester pitched a great game in game 7 but he got outdueled. It happens. Beckett was injured so you really can't consider what he did as choking and even so he still went 5 innings giving up 1 run in game 6. Dice K went 1-1 in the alcs. Rays won a closely matched series.

This could be a ploy to get a better offer out of the Yanks. The Sox don't need/want him. The only way he ends up in Boston is if he accepts 4th Starter money, which he won't. He certainly won't start ahead of Lester, Beckett, or Dice-K.

Too many teams in both the AL/NL need a #1 (NL) or #2 (AL) starter for him not to get a decent offer. Boston is out of the picture, period.

Atro's comments over time. And how long have you been around here? I've been around long enough to know that he gives credit where credit is due. And certainly, I can't see as how he or any Yankee fan could be jealous of the Red Sox. If anything, they should be jealous of the Yankees, we got all the choice tee times this year.

Love that last part, though. That would be a new twist on the old "I know you are but what am I" response, yes? Good stuff Dan. But I think you missed the school bus this morning.

Very true. The Sox have all the starting pitching they need already. Aside from the 3 you listed Masterson also probably makes the rotation in 2009. Lowe could be trying to get better offers but my thing is that a lot of free agents are coming out and saying they don't want to go to NY. Now if they don't want to that is fine but it seems counter productive to do that and take the potential highest bidder out of the game. My bet is Lowe stays a Dodger.

I don't get why players are saying they don't want to play for NY. What is it? Other thank Hank opening harmlessly opening his mouth from time-to-time I can't think of any other reason why they wouldn't want to be there. Media scrutiny? Doubt it. It's just as bad, if not worse, in Boston.

October 22, 2008  09:55 AM ET

I can't think of any reason why the Dodgers wouldn't re-sign their most consistent pitcher. Billingsley totally sucked in the playoffs!!

Maybe it is the tax rate? But I mean in the late 90's and early 00's everyone wanted to sign here and now it seems like a complete reversal. But even if you don't want to play for the Yanks or Mets you don't tell the media that. You let the NY teams think you want to play there and they bid a lot of money and then the other teams that want you bid more than they would have had the NY teams not bid and then you take the 2nd or 3rd best offer. CC openly stated he wants to play on the West Coast which eliminates Boston, both NY teams, both Chicago teams, the Braves, the Orioles. And those are the teams with the most money and the owners willing to spend it.
