Vols safety might play offense

Tennessee defensive coordinator John Chavis had a unique take when asked whether he was scared that star safety Eric Berry could be used on offense. "If I ever get to the point where I'm afraid of anything, then I'm going to stay at home," Chavis said. "I can't wear my wife's dress right now -- it's not the right size. But if I ever get afraid, I'm going to stay at home and probably start cross-dressing." It was an odd answer, but the burly coach got his point across. With No. 2 Alabama coming to town Saturday, UT will need to use every available weapon to slow the Crimson Tide. One idea is to use the All-America safety on special teams or on offense, and multiple UT coaches said they were not afraid to use Berry on those units.

Makes sense. That offense could use all the weapons it could get.

Yes, Tennessee could use all the help it can get. This would be a great pick for an upset though. Alabama won't make it down the homestretch, and Tennessee has a reputation of stepping up out of nowhere to beat a highly ranked team.

Tennessee is having a down year when it decides to use a defensive player (a stud of one at that) to play offense because a lack of playmakers. The Vols are a hard team to figure out sometimes. Sometimes they play great, other times not.

This is a huge rivalry game. Anything can happen and probably will but I think Bama pulls it out close. Our D should be too much for the Vols to overcome and we should muster just enough Offense against their D. 17-10 Bama

I don't think cross dressing was the best reference to make, especially in the South. I'm surprised no one yet has ripped him apart for saying that.

This will be a great game.......I hope...............TN has just been so lop-sided with a great D and a struggling O, maybe this will spark a change and make for another memorable game in this ole school grudge match!

We've heard that ALL year. 6-6 or 7-5 at best. I love the fact people still don't believe in us.

a saftey on offense is not going to beat..the crimson tide...get real

watch out for UT in this game just like they ambushed UGA last year...i'm not sayin, i'm just sayin...

Eric Berry was a stud QB in high school in Georgia. He ran for over 1500 yards and threw for 1100 his senior year and ran and passed for over 1100 his junior year. He'd be a nice gadget player or change of pace QB instead of Gerald Jones.

I think this game will be no different from last year a big blow out. and if TN dont watch out it will be a shutout. They will need about 3 Eric Berry's on offense to help their young QB againt a hungry and mean Bama D. RTR Bama 35 TN 10

October 23, 2008  10:17 AM ET

Just shows how desperate TN is getting but I don't think it'll make a difference in the outcome. Berry is a great DB, I'll give him that. But, if he was such a stud QB in H.S. why hasn't he played that pos at TN before now? Everyone knows TN's QBs haven't played very good this season and Bama's D is gonna be up for the game -- just like last year. There will be a lot of hype leading up to the game but, I'm thinking Bama is gonna put 4 qtrs in on this one and the final score won't even be that close -- Bama 38, TN 10? Of course, who knows, TN might play the game of their season and the score could be just the opposite. Isn't college football great?!

I know this ain't baseball, but......... Yogi said it ain't over till it's over. Just let them play the game & shut the f--k up, then we'll all be a little wiser for our patience !!!

Yeah....and Bear Bryant said something about never being nothing but a winner and Saban saying something about "the process and having patience" too! I guess some fans patience (like TN booing their home team this year) is just a representation of their lack of patience AND class. Kinda like when some classless fan can't articulate without using the dreaded "f" word, which only shows how little they actually know to begin with. Roll Tide!
