South Atlanta's Derrick Favors, who is ranked as the nation's No. 1 basketball prospect by Scout, is heading to Memphis on Saturday for an official visit. Memphis is almost like a "home away from home" for Favors, according to South Atlanta coach Michael Reddick. "Derrick has family around the Memphis area," Reddick said, "and Derrick really likes [Memphis coach John Calipari]. He has done such a great job of coaching at Memphis, and gets the school a lot of media play." The 6-foot-9 Favors has already taken recruiting trips to Georgia Tech, Georgia, and N.C. State. He went to N.C. State last weekend and told Reddick that "it went well" but the two have not talked about it any further. Favors is rumored to be deciding between Georgia Tech and Georgia.

This kid doesn't leave Atlanta. I would be shocked if Hewitt doesn't get this kid to sign with the Jackets.

who cares it's football season

October 22, 2008  12:07 PM ET

and I'm assuming he's one & done-
but I wouldn't go to the SEC if you're goign to be
one and done (as he likely will be) where there are
way too many athletic kids..... I'd much rather
head to Memphis wwhere playing against lesser competition
would showcase your skills more

October 22, 2008  12:07 PM ET

and as for ACC- too many good top teams-

October 22, 2008  04:41 PM ET

But the big question if he goes to Memphis..........can he shoot better than 50% from the free throw line?

October 22, 2008  10:05 PM ET

Hey JGB & Ten': I see you guys are throwing jabs at Memphis because of the conference we play in & the free throw jokes..lol yea' that's funny but the ACC is not what it used to be! It ABSOLUTELY does not matter what conf. you're in when MARCH MADNESS rolls around...Memphis ran Michigan State(BIG 10),Texas(Big 12-in front of their home crowd in Houston during the Elite 8! A pressured packed game for a C-USA school!!haha) & UCLA(PAC 10) off the floor in the NCAA's last year on the way to the National Championship game. If being from a big named conf gets you so prepared for the Tourney then tell me why the hell did those teams get waxed by a Conf. USA school?! Please answer this question.... You, like everybody else in the country, are caught up in the "Memphis plays in a weak conf" jabber instead of judging a team on talent..

October 23, 2008  01:10 AM ET

nnug, I don't bash Conf USA. I think Memphis got to the title game because they were more talented than everyone else. They had one weakness.....excessively poor FT shooting, and it finally caught up to them in the last game.

October 23, 2008  08:44 AM ET

I think in basketball, you can build a national power outside of the big conferences. Football, not so much.

October 23, 2008  05:06 PM ET

Tiger basketball is just as big as any of the power conferences. Last year Memphis would have rolled through the SEC and ACC. Just because your in one of those conferences doesn't give you wins. You have to play the games, and look at all the big name schools we destroyed last year.

D. Favors please come to Memphis! A whole CITY (plus the fans around the country) worships the Tigers, and the University of Memphis is a great place to go to school.

For the people that think UM is a ghetto school (i hear that a lot), its not.

October 23, 2008  06:48 PM ET

I don't think the argument is that Memphis didn't deserve to be in the title game or doesn't deserve to be a national contender due to the strength of its conference. However, getting that #1 seed in the tournament is huge. There is often a big gap somewhere between the 9-12 ranked teams in the nation (those that would theoretically get a 3-seed and would most often stand in the way of the #2) and those ranked 13-16 (the teams that get a 4-seed and would, if seeding played out, be in the way of a #1 getting to the Elite 8). So the fact that Memphis piles up wins against mediocre teams in conference and keeps the more damning losses off its resume definitely help it as far as seeding goes, and it's clear that a 1-seed can make the road a whole lot easier than a 2-seed.

That being said, last year's Memphis team was the exception to the rule. That team may be one of the best in NCAA history not to win a title, so I have no argument with them getting a one-seed. They proved everyone wrong who doubted their free throw shooting until it mattered most, but even then they ended up as the #2 team in the nation. That's not bad at all. And yes, last year Memphis may have put up a pretty impressive resume in the ACC, and would probably have finished #1 or 2 in the SEC (the only competition being Tennessee), both of which could have ended up in them receiving a 1-seed anyway. But to say that year-in, year-out they'll be able to do this is wishful thinking. Calipari is stocking his team with one-and-done talent, and those guys won't always pan out or create positive team chemistry like it did with Rose. The teams in the big leagues like the ACC, Big East and PAC 10 (Big 12, SEC and Big 10 are second-tier conferences, really) as well as the "name programs" not in the top 3 conferences (KU, Kentucky and Indiana) will receive more respect than a team like Memphis and deservedly so because they may end up with 3 or 4 losses, but they play far tougher teams overall.

October 23, 2008  07:04 PM ET

By the way, Memphis fans should start to worry, as they've already lost a battle on the recruiting trail (Thomas Robinson) to the same team that ended it's dream in the national title game. They may still get a great group of players, but Calipari can't afford to lose all that top talent and still expect to return to the Final Four.

Hey Jayhawk Rock: Let me give you this resume about the Memphis Tigers:
The '05-'06 squad(the same year he installed the DDM offense) which included Shawne Williams(Freshman)-In the NBA Now,Rodney Carney(Senior)-In the NBA Now,Darius Washington(Soph.) as 60% of the scoring...CDR(Freshman),Antonio Anderson(Freshman),Robert Dozier(Freshman) & Joey Dorsey(Soph.) was also on this team. This squad went to the ELITE 8 as a number one seed-Only one Mcdonald's all American was on this team

The '06-'07 Squad went to the Elite 8 as a num. 2 seed with no Mcdonald All Americans & no one & done's..They lost 60% of their scoring from the previous year & still got back to the Elite 8!

And the '07-'08 Squad made it to the Nat'l Championship with 1 one & done player-D.Rose

The NCAA don't reward teams with a #1 seed if they're playing a weak schedule. Your RPI has to be remarkable te recieve a seed that high. And what is all of this talk about Coach Cal stocking his team with one & done players?!! D.Rose & Shawne Williams are the only ones in the last 6 years that came out after their Freshman seasons~Dejuan Wagner was a one & done player in the'01-'02 year.. So what are you talking about SIR?!

Bottom line is this,Memphis was a Mario Chalmers shot away from having a Championship this year. Coach Cal is building a monster MONSTER program in Memphis..You people around the Nation need to really understand what's going on down this way...If you have'nt been paying attention to what's been happening to the Memphis Tigers the past 3 years then you're being naive..

And oh yea we dont need Thomas Robinson anyway when you have a beast like Will Coleman coming next year anyway..oh who is Will Coleman you ask?! Check out this footage...

Oh i guess you cant upload stuff from youtube on here lol my bad! Will Coleman is on youtube~look him up & tell me do we need T.Robinson haha

October 25, 2008  09:04 PM ET

Thomas Robinson was NOT agressively recruited by Memphis, so not getting him was not a huge blow to Memphis. He emerged as "hot" prospect after summer league play (wasn't on too many teams' scope) and while it would have been great to get him, let's not exagerate. Memphis incoming class for this year is great and they're already on their way for next year, with plenty more on their scope. No team gets all the players they recruit.

Every year, you guys say Memphis can't win because they lost this guy or that guy.The bulk of their scoring is gone.Don't be a dummy, please pay attention! All the Tigers do is RELOAD.Yes Coach Cal is a bad man.
