Believe it or not, other teams offered him more.

I'm sure there's not too many takers for a 35-year old 3rd baseman coming off hip surgery. Unless of course the Sox eat up most of the contract.

Mike was great last year, I hate to see him go. i guess no other way but to let him go to make room for tex.

why screw a player that has played his heart out of your team, for a guy that "might" want to play for you.. i don't get it, they don't need Tex in the line-up, they really don't need him, they have enough players they don't need another one.. Lowell gave up alot to stay with them, and to treat the man like that would be terrible.

True enough. This may all be a ploy to drive up the price on the Yankees like they did with Johan Santana. The attempt may be to get the Yankees to sign either Tex or Manny but not both.

Ortiz is horrible without Manny..

I love how they make it a sure thing that they're getting Texeira while they have to compete with a bunch of other teams including the richest Yankees.

No one and I mean no one is going to pay Lowell that salary. I also don't see anyone wanting an oft-injured old man in return for anything of note.

Let's see how Ortiz does when his wrist heals before writing him off. I'd love to think he was done but even when he was playing at the end of the year his wrist was still swollen.

I'd have to see how the math worked out before I'd be in favor of those moves...Tex is going to demand a huge salary but I have a feeling he's going to be asking more than he's worth, similar to Johnny Damon whom the Bosox were smart not to keep.

I'm a big Lowell fan, he was the wild card in the original trade sending Hanley Ramirez et al for Beckett. Fenway is made for Lowell's swing and if his hip comes back he has three, four more productive seasons left AT LEAST.

Hmm... JFK, you bring forward a point i never considered. There is t he Papi shift that all teams do which has worked well against him. Lowell and Tex would be overall cheaper and more productive. If they part with Papi, they don;t need to really platoon anyone. Papi may also have some trade value left.
