Syracuse University has taken a tangible step toward firing its football coach, Greg Robinson, enlisting a search firm to help find his replacement. A person with knowledge of the plan said the university was using Chuck Neinas, a veteran consultant and former commissioner of the Big Eight Conference, for assistance in hiring Robinson's replacement.

If he does get FIRED, will he be known as Smokey Robinson?

The funny thing is that coaches who know they are on the chopping block still stick around to see it happen instead of simply resigning. Amazing to see the stupidity of these people.

October 23, 2008  07:59 AM ET

we all know that Lloyd Carr told Syracuse to fire him!

October 23, 2008  08:02 AM ET

Why is this even a shock? They were so quick to run off Coach P and we see the fruits of that labor. Not to mediocre NCAA football schools (Syracuse, Clemson, etc. etc.) You are not a powerhouse so don't give a coach the expectations like you are.

bout time....
can't believe how far this program has fallen

October 23, 2008  09:39 AM ET

Devo, It's purely a monetary thing. If he were to resign then the school would no longer have to pay him. By getting fired then they have to pay off the remaining years of the contract they both agreed to.

Finally. Cuse needs someone who can do a bang up job recruiting. I don't think anyone is regarding Syracuse as a powerhouse - they surely haven't been close to that status in over a decade since McNabb took them to the 98 Orange bowl. Any self-respecting Orange fan would expect a school and [former] program of Syracuse's stature to beat, if not, compete with the better part of the teams on their schedule. 28-42 loss to Akron? 10-30 loss to Northwestern? Give me a break. Only beating Northeastern by nine points for their only win of the season is a tad unacceptable. Hopefully AD Darryl Gross can bring in someone legitimate. He was an instrumental factor in bringing Pete Carroll to USC. Turn this around.

Looks like Lloyd Carr is the new head coach at SU....

October 23, 2008  12:41 PM ET

IS this really a surprise to anyone?

October 23, 2008  12:50 PM ET

SO WHEN THE COMPANY YOU'RE WORKING FOR HIRES SOMEONE TO LOOK FOR A POSSIBLE REPLACEMENT FOR YOU, DOES THAT TELL YOU IT MAY BE TIME TO GO, PARTY'S OVER, LOCK THE DOOR ON YOUR WAY OUT.

It's about damn time!

The 'Cuse should hire a proven winner who can build the team at the ground up....literally...RUNNING the ball and strong O-Line. I don't see a major big-name guy obviously...so why not the unheralded, solid, former dome-team coach GLEN MASON (fomer Minnesota head coach who consistenly had Minnesota as a top 10 nationally rushing team built around a strong Midwest O-line)
Gotta hunch he'd fit in perfect.

About dang time although it's not all his fault either.. the school needs to fire the AD also he pretty much sucks. We haven't been good since PP left that man should never have been fired. But who can we blame for our lousy recruiting? Well you can blame schools like UConn, Rutgers, UBuff for taking out New England, NY, and NJ kids and FIU, USF, UCF, and FAU for our downfall gone are the days we got talent from the state of florida that normally would have gone to UF, FSU, and UM because those new schools are keeping kids at home.

If anyone here is shocked by this...

October 23, 2008  04:26 PM ET

Serve the man his justice, go ahead and terminate him NOW. I'm not a fan of the midseason firings... but it's been long overdue as he has finished driving this one proud program into the ground. Also, there is very little to be gained from keeping what amounts to a "lame duck coach" around.

Syracuse is a football program that is doomed till the end of time.

Dude - you hit it on the head. The old recruiting grounds are gone. Also agree...fire the AD while are at it SU. He should not be left off the hook. He gets no credit for the BB team...right Jimmie?
