Beckham testing Galaxy's power?

If David Beckham wants to play for England at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa he needs to leave Major League Soccer right now. Not on loan, not for just a short training spell with AC Milan or any other European club that comes calling, but for good -- his own good and that of the Galaxy. Ever since AEG sounded the trumpets in January 2007 and announced amid much boasting and fanfare that it had signed Beckham, the Galaxy has been nothing but a puppet in the hands of Beckham's management team. Just how emasculated the club is when it comes to Beckham was again clearly in evidence Wednesday. Stories were pouring out of Europe that AC Milan was close to signing the 33-year-old midfielder to a short-term loan deal during the MLS off-season. And the Galaxy? The Galaxy had no idea what was happening. Beckham opted not to be available to reporters after the team's training session Wednesday in Carson, and no Galaxy official had the clout or the guts to make him face the media. The front office never even issued a news release. Bruce Arena, who wears two hats as the Galaxy's coach and general manager, appeared bemused by it all. Beckham has long insisted that he wants to take part in the World Cup in South Africa and will do whatever is necessary to be on the England team. To do so, he has to prove that he still has what it takes at the highest level. That's why a permanent move to AC Milan, if it can be accomplished, is in his best interests.

What an over hyped mess. Like nobody could see this coming down the road? The Galaxy were idiots to have even gotten involved in this now over-rated player.

October 23, 2008  08:26 AM ET

Who cares.

October 23, 2008  08:37 AM ET

i agree that this is an overhyped mess.... Beckham is not leaving the MLS, plain n' simple... i doubt they pulled a Fire and left an open-ended exit clause like we did with JCO... Beckham's contract is air tight, and this is simply a short loan to stay in shape... love it how the media twist EVERYTHING :D

October 23, 2008  08:49 AM ET

The great thing about this is it gets the MLS in non-soccer specific talk radio for a few minutes.
Oh wait...I don't listen to Jim Rome so I could care less what non-soccer fans think on general sport talk radio. I'd hate to pull a Joe Kinnear on Jim Rome...wait, no I wouldn't hate it.

October 23, 2008  08:54 AM ET

Honetsly, I'd say let him go. Now I know he brings in a huge amount of money, but the club has actually gone down in terms of quality over the past couple of years and he hasn't done anything to change that. Think of what you could get for him and what you could spend all the free money on in return. Bruce Arena could make the Galaxy go from pretenders to contenders. It has just been a bunch of hoopla-Hollywood drama since he has arrived.

October 23, 2008  09:19 AM ET

JMG84, I see what you're saying and it makes sense in a very practical way. But I worry about how soccer people in the rest of the world and soccer haters in this country could use it symbolically.

October 23, 2008  09:39 AM ET

Yeah, all those games he played for England in the last two years really show how much his skills have suffered. Also all these things are a rumors. He may just got over and train for a couple of months. After all the European sports press has never been known to exaggerate or make things up.

Grahame Jones is a known MLS troll since he got rejected for a job by the league.

October 23, 2008  10:09 AM ET

I agree with kopper.

October 23, 2008  11:26 AM ET

Wow I'm so completely taken aback by this news. Let him go, buy Ronaldo (older, fatter Ronaldo).

October 23, 2008  11:36 AM ET

JMG84- to claim that Beckham hasnt done anything for the Galaxy seems like score board viewing to me....

seriously, just look at his surrounding talent....

at the beginning of the season this is how the salary looked....

Beckham 400-500k of the cap space
Donovan 400-500k of the cap space
Ruiz 400-500k of the cap space...

that is nearly half of your cap space wasted on 3 players... you cannot do this and expect great things regardless of the quality of the league... Ruiz was injured 3/4 of the year and traded to Toronto... LD is leading the golden boot..... beckham has notched 5 goals and 9 assists.... beckham has done quite alot for LA... it their DEFENSE that has let them down..

October 23, 2008  11:37 AM ET

with Ruiz's and Donovan's extra cap space to spend, they will be able to afford better talent to produce a team.... i think (depending on signings) that LA could in fact be a quality side next season

October 23, 2008  11:38 AM ET

Its money or results for LAG... you can dump Becks and go back to playing in front of 12k every night and barely break even (if you are lucky) or make tons of money and generate publicity everywhere in the world and keep Becks but due to the salaray cap surround him with garbage and miss the playoffs...

October 23, 2008  11:40 AM ET

Isn't soccer gay? Why is a sports website talking about gays?

October 23, 2008  12:05 PM ET

LD is leading the golden boot, Becks is producing decent numbers. But exactly what you said is the point, the drop in talent around those 2. Now IF Landycakes moves on to Europe again (we'll see if that actually happens) then that would give the Galaxy some funds to do some things. And there is one thing they should dedicate themselves to, DEFENSE. I would say GK should be their #1 priority, but look at what Joe Cannon did when he was with them. He is a superior keeper but still could not keep them in games. That back 4 needs to be totally revamped, minus Sean Franklin. With that said, they still need to work on getting a steady keeper, because all the keepers they have play like garbage. Why don't they try and scoop up Chris Seitz from RSL? On top of that, they need to get a decent forward, as I am unsure whether you can count on Buddle to produce like that again. Now do you think they could secure the services of all these needs off of LD's salary and still make the playoffs? I am very skeptical.......

October 23, 2008  12:43 PM ET

LA's offense is good. Beckham's precision passing and free kicks are a big part of that. Get a good GK and a defense that actually defends and can pass (not kick to anywhere) and you could end up with a truly great offense thus a very good team.

QUOTE(#10):

beckham has notched 5 goals and 9 assists.... beckham has done quite alot for LA... it their DEFENSE that has let them down..

Yeah, but majority of those tallies were in the first half of the year. He's been MIA during the second half slide. It's tricky, and I think Kopper brings up a very interesting point about giving fodder for the haters, but the flip side of the argument is that letting him go shows that MLS and the Galaxy are NOT dependant upon a single player.

Arena made a point yesterday that maybe someone on this board can clarify, can loans terminate when the window is closed? If not, then this 3 month thing wouldn't work anyway. He'd miss the first couple of months of the MLS season which I can't imagine anyone allowing. If that info is accurate, than make a decision, SELL him to Milan (we know Milan won't pay for him) or kill as this talk .

October 23, 2008  01:10 PM ET

Loans are legit and can terminate whenever the loan contract is up (1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 months are somewhat standard lengths).

A loan move is fine because Capello has said that anyone who isn't in shape won't be picked for the team. Beckham loves playing for England (that should be obvious) and will do whatever it takes, within his power, to play in 2010. LA should support him on this.

LA's problem is its backline and its keeper. Fix those and they're a playoff team.

October 23, 2008  01:16 PM ET

JMG84- i think with Lewis and beckham getting a full season in that LA will do better....

with LD and Ruiz opening up cap space, we'll be seeing an influx of better talent.... i agree minus franklin the entire back line needs working on... Buddle wouldnt be the forward id concern about replacing... id focus primarily on replacing Gordon... yes he's gotten a few goals this season but his games seem few and far between... and with LD leaving their offense would be struggling....

i agree that it would be a smart plan to get Seitz..... while he's a backup for RSL, he's also accustomed to the MLS and plays for the youth national teams... if bruce were smart he'd pull a Guzan and sign him.... with a more solid back line, Seitz would only really have to come up with a couple good saves a game...

now they went out and signed a forward from their academy... so im guessing he's Arena's new "altidore" type project.....
---

B.A- i dont think a loan is necessarily based on a specific amount of time.... i think after 3 months if LA call him back, then he comes back....

GOOD RIDDANCE TO BAD RUBBISH.

October 23, 2008  02:13 PM ET

have you guys watched any of the Galaxy games this year? The problem is not the defnese. It's GK and Central Mid! I don't know who said Cannon? He's the GK for SJ, it was Cronin, and he stunk, not as bad as Wicks (maybe the worst professional GK ive ever seen), but still bad, lots of errors that led to goals, the defense just looked bad because they were constantly bombarded by in rythem passing combos from the other side due to the lack of any ball holding ability, vagenas and pires did not get the job done,
i agree replace gordon, terrible, if beckham and lewis are both there, then all they need are actual CMs and a new GK.
