Red Bulls to make an offer to Veron
Just as before, when Juan Sebastian Veron re-signed with Estudiantes de La Plata, next week delegates from Red Bull New York will arrive to offer a succulent sum of dollars to "La Brujita" and convince him to join the Yankee team. The exact numbers have not been revealed, but MLS is talking about offering him a contract on level with David Beckham's ($250 million over five years). Brujita joked, "It makes me happy that they think I am still capable of playing soccer."

I love Veron. But he is waaayyy past his prime. There is no way he is worth that kind of money. For that kind of money I would go after Zidane.

Second that. Inject 3/4 of that into the economy, then think about paying Veron the rest.

There is no way it would be a $250 mil contract...if NJRB did that - I would move to get a job in THAT front office. NO ONE can be that dumb. Veron wasn't worth that when he was in his prime.

still i dont believe this, as Ives has close connections to the Bulls he has yet to even mention him as a possibility of DP option

You guys can say all you want about Veron not being worth that amount of money but he is a real soccer super star compared to the Beckster who is just an English Marketing product and LA still payed that much. Now, what has Beckham done soccer wire for MSL?
Look at Schelotto, not even half the player that Veron is but at the top of the MVP candidates.

That has to be a mistake. 250 MIL ON A FIVE YEAR DEAL!! He cant make more money than Angel, Blanco and Schelotto. He's not that good now and he was'nt that good then. It's a nice idea but I'd drop a zero from the "FIVE" year deal that will take him to 38 years old!!!!
25 MIL on a 3 year and we have a deal!

Beckam is past his prime but he was worth the deal due to all the attention and revenue brought to the MLS. Outside of soccer purists and fans, the casual observer has no idea who Veron is. He is also outside of his prime. I do not know what he would bring to the RBNY let alone to MLS. His impact would be negligible. Beckam money should only got to international stars like Henry.

vicious- welcome, and your first post ?? there seems to be several of these today...
answer me this... what would Verron do to deem a 250M bank???
what people are seemingly forgetting, is the league is only giving beckham something of a 25M contract, but they have all the little perks like Sponsorship deals, merchandise sales, etc.... how many ave. footie fans are going to purchase a Verron RBNJ jersey (that sounds weird :P)?? do you honestly suspect that he'll bring in that many fans to away games?? do you think verron will attract 40k+ to Giants Stadium??
those are some of the biggest reasons why beckham is worth the contract.... money money money.... he's improved the play on the field, but he's improved the league's pocket book as well.... to put it in short- not worth a 250M (plus or minus) contract, b/c he wouldnt get the sponsorships that beckham gets...

I always did like Veron (old number 4 in his United days) but I can't see him willing to leave Argentina. He's got a good setup down there.

Seriously not worth it. Way past his prime, and little really in the way of name recognition.

Again, it's not about how much an MLS team is going to pay a player, given the Beckham deal, it is obvious that they disregard the real value of the subject as a soccer player but consider it as a marketing item ( all about the $$$$). The question is; How much can that player contribute to the help the league become a world class competition? I disagree with those who try to imply that David contributed to elevate the level of the game, for that purpose we had Pablo Angel, Blanco, Schelotto, Emilio, Morales, Donovan???.

The worst player ever to come out of Argentina. NJRB CEO must be on some good **** to offer that kind of money. Where can I get some of that????? He was horrible in his prime. He suck at Lazio and was nowhere to be found at the 02 W/C. He should never wear the number 10 jersey for Argentina. If the MLS wants some really players then open up it market like the league in Europe and then maybe some decent players might look over here.

He's still good enough for a 2 million a year salary, no more.

Money seems like a lot. But Veron is playing extremely well for Estudiantes right now. Did anyone see that goal he scored against Botafogo on Tuesday? I doubt he'll want to leave Estudiantes. He's too attached. I miss watching him play in Europe. The move to the EPL messed up his career

This just goes to show you how clueless the NJRB organization is.
They throw Beckham-headliner type money at a player who has already snubbed the league and failed internationally save for a few good games here and there.
For that kind of money, go after someone in their prime. Even though the most likely answer from them would be NO due to the meaningless level of MLS (not MSL).
The league is at another growth point and it needs to adjust to accommodate it. This pandering of has beens is creating the most lucrative retirement league in the world. I know most of that money is an incentive laden contract, but if you can make it work for one player make it work for an entire team.
The salary cap must grow substantially. The poor quality is showing. With expansion coming up it'll get worse. This is almost exactly like the US economy, the rich get richer, stadiums are going up left and right (mortgages) and the ones who need the money the most are being overlooked (the players and the cap)!
Veron? He can play here, but get your heads out of your arse! 250 mil?!?!!
