02:12 PM ET 10.23 | Dick Vitale has just gone live on ESPN and reported that Lute Olson will resign today as the University of Arizona's basketball coach. The school issued an immediate denial. "Dick Vitale's piece is incorrect at this time," Arizona sports information director Tom Duddleston said in a statement. He said the school does not have any press conference or official release scheduled at this time. Vitale reported the resignation would come today, and that assistant coach Mike Dunlap would replace Olson. "It's a lot of physical problems," Vitale said. "I just feel he feels like it's going to be very difficult to endure" the coming season.

no, way... Until I hear it out of his mouth, I do not believe the report.

October 23, 2008  02:24 PM ET

I believe coaches even less than the meda so I believe Dick Vitale is right. If you went by what the coaches say, Nick Saban wasnt even considering the Alabama job but somehow he signed with them the very next day.

Always had some of the most entertaining, talented teams to watch. I wish him the best if this is true.

We have expected, here in Southern AZ, that a particular illness would finally result in his stepping down. I just wish he hadn't wasted a year for the school to search for a new head coach. I wonder what will happen to 2009- and beyond recruits. Maybe we can get Tony Bennett to leave Pullman for Tucson!

Resigning or not, Lute Olson is one class act!
And one of the main reasons I took a liking to NCAA BB.
All the best Lute!

October 23, 2008  02:48 PM ET

I hope he does resign then maybe the Wildcats can win another national title

October 23, 2008  02:57 PM ET

Dunlap is a good coach and has had tremendous success everwhere he's been. He might be a keeper

October 23, 2008  03:02 PM ET

no lute!!!!!! man this is terrible. but maybe its his time, whatever he chooses to do i love you lute for all the great things you brought to not only u of a, but to arizona

October 23, 2008  03:15 PM ET

CLASS ACT, INDEED! IF IT'S TRUE, TAKE A BOW LUTE! WE WILL MISS YOU. HAPPY TRAILS.

October 23, 2008  03:16 PM ET

You notice the information director said, "Dick Vitale's piece is incorrect *at this time*." This means they will make the announcement tomorrow...

Lute is a true class act, and will be missed. All the best!

Ditto Lute was good for the game and the game was good for him. But if it's time it's time. His health is more important than any game oo basketball. Best of luck and health Lute.

to me lute is one of the elite college basketball coaches. recruited very well, and always seem to have his teams peaking in march.

as far as replacement, let whomever act as an interim for this season then bring in anthony grant from VCU. this guy is the best young coach in land.

So much for Arizona basketball

Yep, hes the Coach K of the west coast.

October 23, 2008  04:08 PM ET

Class Act? Don't think so ... what he did to the team and to Kevin O'Neill to come back, undermine his authority and then fire him after he was the promised succesor now only to leave less than a year later. Don't think. Maybe if he worked on his marriage this hard it wouldn't have failed!

October 23, 2008  04:14 PM ET

We love you Lute! Thanks for 25 years of BB memories. Best of luck to you.

I have been an Arizona basketball season ticket holder for 25 years. This story has now been confimed. I will miss Lute. He was a great coach and a great man. All of Arizona will miss him. However, I now am a snowbird living in Wyoming and live near Denver. I have season tickets to the Denver Nuggets and have watched Mike Dunlap as an assistant coach of the Nuggets. I believe Arizona is lucky to have him. He just might be the right guy in the right place at the right time. He is a winner. He knows the game and relates well to players. He has won two national championships at Metro State in Denver. He can recruit, he can motivate, and he knows x's and o'x as well as anybody. I think we are lucky to have him and wish him well.

Not gonna happen. Bennett is building a program here that will compete and surpass what Arizona has established. Bennett is a COUG for life

Somehow, you just knew that as soon as the NCAA starting holding universities accountable for graduating athletes, that Lute would find some reason to step down. Good riddance. Few coach's in the history of college basketball have done so little with so much talent as Lute. His talented players always got him deep into the playoffs, his lack of coaching skills created the Lute Olson Bar....one round and your out! Maybe he can get a job coaching football at Clemson or Tennessee. Their football programs have the same " standards" as the Arizona basketball program.

October 23, 2008  05:14 PM ET

No way this is true unless Lute is very ill. As for Nozonafan's comments, if you think this had something to do with the graduation rate of his players, you're a moron.
