Cardinals out of Peavy race

General manager John Mozeliak all but dismissed the Cardinals as players for San Diego Padres ace and 2007 National League Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy. The Padres are hoping to shed payroll in part by trading Peavy, who exercises full no-trade protection but is believed willing to relinquish such protection if dealt to any of six NL clubs, including the Cardinals. Peavy is guaranteed $60 million the next four seasons, including $17 million in 2012 plus a $4 million buyout should his club fail to exercise a $22 million option for 2013. The Cardinals already are committed to Chris Carpenter, Adam Wainwright and Kyle Lohse for at least three more seasons. Carpenter is owed at least $44.5 million through 2011. Wainwright is due $13.75 million through 2011, and as much as $34.75 million through 2013. Lohse signed a four-year, $41 million extension in September. The Cardinals will owe the threesome $33.4 million in 2011 and, should it assume options on Carpenter and Wainwright for 2012, $34.9 million the following season.

The TRUTH has learned tht NL teams were asked to compete for Peavy by playing a drinking game. In a surprising move, the Cards did not send LaRussa? Rule #1, always send your ACE!!

October 24, 2008  09:49 AM ET

NL teams know they only have to compete against other NL teams, there is not the urgrency to sign the big name like in the AL, it is just not as neccesary.

No Braves, No Cards, No Dodgers.... Peavy, re-think the Yanks and get your self a ring before you retire!

October 24, 2008  10:25 AM ET

I think the Cardinals are making a mistake. They have the prospects and payroll room to get this deal done, and bring Peavy in, and Peavy is locked up for four years at relatively reasonable dollars I understand the $$$$ they have invested in Carpenter, but he is a 100% unknown at this point because if his injury problems. Mozeliak should build his 2009 team with the assumption that Carp is not going to be there......and that being the case, he should go after Peavy because the rotation is not deep enough without Carp.

If he's not going to spend more on the rotation, he should have plenty of money to go after Brian Fuentes, then.

He has a no trade clause, you think he gives that up for free? He will want a big contract, no?

He's already signed through 2012, with I believe a club option for 2013

Tenrings you took the words right out of my mouth. Carpenter was hurt all of last season, who's to know if he'll be ready for this year? I would hope that he is ready but what's the harm in completely solidifying the rotation? Even if Carp is healthy and ready to go, why not have two proven aces out there shutting down opponents? The bullpen had some tough times last year, and the cards need a solid closer. They do have the perez kid that throws gas, but a few solid set-up guys are needed badly. Peavey would be an excellent addition, not only does he want to be in STL but he knows he can win there. The offense is fairly solid with the emergence of ludwik to take heat off pujols, Ankiel only getting better. The Cardinals only need pitching to lock up several playoff runs down the road.

Yes it's quite disturbing that Mo is counting on Carpenter to be productive. I'd say the odds are less than 40% that he'll ever pitch to his former abilities. Whether it's Peavy or another top pitcher, we need a proven ace heading up the staff. I don't care if it's a trade or a free agent, we can't compete without a solid, healthy pitching staff. Another top starter and a top reliever should be the #1 priorities this winter.

hahahah thats pretty funny. I heard the Yanks want in and are planning on sending out David Wells

October 24, 2008  02:31 PM ET

They should trade for Mark Mulder.

October 24, 2008  02:31 PM ET

it always makes me shake my head when teams give up or trade away the ace of their staff. its usually a pretty good indicator that they won't do anything in the upcoming season unless of course you're the minnesota twins

October 24, 2008  02:56 PM ET

I don't understand why the Padres want to move Peavy, either.....but if they are doing it, I want the Cardinals to take advantage.

October 24, 2008  03:23 PM ET

Ehh gads, I was here this morning early, and they still have not found an unobjectionalble Peavy picture?

October 24, 2008  07:36 PM ET

peavy...cc....rodriguez & manny...everyone take a pay cut & go to the yankees...win it all in style in a brand new stadium....why not?

Hey, dumbbass, shut up about the Yankees and Peavy winning a ring in NY. Last time I checked, your overpaid, overrated team didn't even make the playoffs.

You're right, he should go to the Phillies.
