Details of Rodriguez's Michigan contract

Rich Rodriguez's contract was signed and executed today and was released by the University of Michigan. It was signed by president Mary Sue Coleman, athletic director Bill Martin and Rodriguez and is slightly changed from the letter of intent he signed when he accepted the job last December. The term is six years, the base salary remains $300,000 for the first year -- increasing according to the department's salary merit program -- and the additional compensation is $1.65 million per year, substantially less than the $2.2 million agreed upon in the letter of intent. The difference is made up in a $550,000 deferred-compensation agreement in which the money goes directly into a retirement account. The total remains $2.5 million per year. Another item added since the December agreement: a written provision for the $2.5-million payment U-M is making to West Virginia for Rodriguez's buyout. He also will get a private box upon Michigan Stadium's renovation in 2010.

In 2-3 years, Rich Rod will have the Wolverines back to being the best team in Michigan or not. I've said from day one that RR was a big mistake. A Big Least coach simply can't understand what it takes to win in the Big Ten. RR coached up a storm versus Cincinnati, Connecticut, Louisville, Pitt, Rutgers, Syracuse and Temple. That, my friends, is Michigan's problem. Say goodbye to Big Ten titles until RR is replaced plus five years.

meeeeeechigaaaaaan should have not signed just yet. I've heard the Washington job will be open soon! :) RR might jump ship!

October 25, 2008  10:25 AM ET

In 2010 he maybe sitting in that private box himself.

October 25, 2008  11:02 AM ET

Nice one, Ran. Another great analysis from a Little Ten elitist. Us po' folks in the Least can only win against schols like Geogria, Auburn, Georgia Tech, Oklahoma..blah...blah...blah. Maybe us lil' ones here in the East can show you how to actually win a real non-con game when your con is not busy losing to Toledo and the MAC...whatever..you better hope PSU wins, as if it is OSU- you won't go to the show because the Ten and OSU can't close the deal. Maybe you guys can tell us underprivleged how to beat a MAC team when you figure it out.

That's 1 of his finer kodak moments.

He could take that program over after an ex-ND head coach drove it into the ground. For once I agree with you Sexton.

For wvbeta1610

Did I ever say that WVU was lousy. You are just in a lousy conference (WVU and the Seven Dwarfs). Count how many of the big wins that you cite that are attributable to WVU. South Florida has made amazing stides for being Division I-AA in 2000, but they've proven that they are not ready for the big boys. WVU needs to do the same as BC, Miami and Virginia Tech ---- Leave the Big Least. The ACC would be a nice fit. You already have Maryland as a rival and you could play Pitt as an OOC game.

For wvbeta1610 Again

Penn State didn't lose to Toledo. Rich Rod and Michigan did. I guess you're trying to help prove my point.

Short term: this kills the rumors about him leaving for Clemson or any other job that will come open this winter.

Long term: If Rich Rod can get his recruits to Ann Arbor (and so far he has) the Wolverines will be back near the top of the polls in about 2 to 3 years.

I agree with you on both points.

Can Rich Rod keep them in Ann Arbor? That's questionable. Several players and recruits have already jumped ship. There's more to this than a 2-5 season. I think that WVU tolerated the guy because they were winning. After the season, I wouldn't be surprised to see Rich Rod also jump ship.

Will Michigan have to lower its academic standards to accommodate RR's recruiting...? What has been his pattern in the past...? Anyone...?

I don't think they will have to lower anything. I heard he is consulting with Steve Fisher on how to get around that.

RAN0763:

"RR coached up a storm versus Cincinnati, Connecticut, Louisville, Pitt, Rutgers, Syracuse and Temple." Or "Did I ever say that WVU was lousy? (You didn't use a question mark, I added one for you)"

Which one is it? You got called out when you said WVU couldn't beat anyone good then just bashed the Big East to cover your worthless comment. Try adding something constructive, if you actually went to Penn State and weren't just a hick pretender you would...

October 25, 2008  05:20 PM ET

The key is getting a QB that can be a threat in all aspects of the spread offense and other guys maturing. Michigan has the youngest offense in the conference...it'll get better in time.

October 25, 2008  05:41 PM ET

For gutterb

There isn't an inconsistency in my statements. WVU being being in a joke of a conference doesn't make them a bad team. I stand by "WVU and the Seven Dwarfs." They simply need to get out of the conference. You obviously have no scores or statistics to prove otherwise, so you resort to a personal attack on me. Have you mugged any old ladies lately?

October 25, 2008  05:49 PM ET

So if Rod created a good team in the Big East why can't he do the same elsewhere? Mugged any old ladies, what does that mean?

How do you get a Penn State fan (I assume you're not an alum as you didn't defend yourself in your last comment, but kudos on the correct punctuation) off your doorstep? Pay them for the pizza.

October 25, 2008  06:03 PM ET

I'm not pathetic enough to compile score or statistics to get back at you, but why don't you check out the Big East's bowl records for the past couple of years. By the way: Big Least, 'WVU and the Seven Dwarfs,' that's good stuff. When did you get to bed last night after thinking that up?

Come on, write back, I'm bored. Rutgers-Pitt isn't televised and ND isn't on yet. Don't you love how an unranked team (who has THEIR OWN national network to play their games) can be on the road against a 0-6 team and still get national coverage?

A handful jumped. It's not a flood or a mass exodus. There is no need to worry or question anything.

wow Rutgers and PITT and you are waiting for ND, that sure is some weak football to be anticipating on this fine Saturday.
