Is Beckham loan really a trade?
Despite denials from Major League Soccer, there is widespread belief in Europe that Galaxy midfielder David Beckham's proposed loan to AC Milan could turn into an outright trade. On Friday, no less a figure than Sir Alex Ferguson, the coach of Beckham's first professional team, Manchester United, said it was "hardly a surprise" to see Beckham try to negotiate even a temporary move to the Italian club. On Wednesday, MLS Commissioner Don Garber insisted that Beckham "will be here for the start of the 2009 MLS season" in mid- to late March, a point that was underlined on Thursday by Ivan Gazidis, the deputy commissioner of MLS. If a move to Milan fails to come about, there are other teams interested. England's Portsmouth is one of them.

I don't understand the Beckham hate. First it's good riddance to bad rubbish. A washed up never been who's best playing days are behind him. The MLS is a perfect sorry league for this sorry excuse to a right midfielder to go. His top flight playing days are behind him etc.. etc.. etc...
Now all of the sudden he is being "wooed" by Milan and Portsmouth, likely we will hear other names pop up. Now all of the sudden he is too talented to waste his time in the MLS. Now he can't wait to get out of the league.
How is this different from him training with Arsenal last MLS off season? He still is a professional, right? He still should get compensated for training with Milan.
He will be back with the Galaxy next season. This really is not news.

MAN, am I glad I don't get the LA Times on a regular basis. What a washed-up, fact-voided, egotistical rag it is. They should "credit" the actual author of this crap, not just the paper. This is the second time in a week the LAT has written Eurosnobberishness. (yes, I am well aware that is not a real word . . . yet)

We hear such varying opinions because he's such a polarizing figure who puts himself in the spotlight at every opportunity. But I think the reason you're hearing such a different take from last offseason's training stint with Arsenal is that this time he may actually put on another club's shirt and play this year. Whether it's for 9 minutes or 90, no one in their right mind twould argue that this is a loan intended by his club to try and help him develop or see additional time, or even to remain fit. This is all about his personal agenda without so much as a thought about the team that's currently paying him more than he would receive anywhere else. .
For a 33 yr old CAPTAIN of his club team, who can't stay healthy for a full season to risk injury solely to remain eligible for his record breaking 108th cap just stinks of selfishness.

How long is this pathetic story going to run? What is this, 4 straight days now? SI, get a life.

yes, Beckham is a sell out, always has been always will be he is only about himself, and that is sooooo different from the rest of the posters of TR, who are completely altruistic in every avenue of life. Man I am glad we are spot on with the esteemed LAT in once for all ratting out this ________ and exposing the inept weakness of the MLS which will fold in mid season next year. Phew.

This isn't a news story. It's just being blown WAY out of proportion. He just wants to train and keep fresh for the English National Team. He isn't going to play at Milan and he shouldn't play for Portsmouth.
Just train.

Wow BlueWhite, someone had an extra helping of sarcasm with breakfast today... Maybe when you and Beckham get done spooning this morning you can face reality. He (with help from others) places himself up on this pedestal as soccer ambassador for the world, blah blah blah. Of course he's going to face his share of criticism. He's masterfully dodged any and all discussion of the terms of his contract when asked directly, in large part because although he likes to fancy himself a player, he's become nothing more than a snake oil salesman and that's what he's being paid for. I grant you that he couldn't have done it without help from MLS, AEG and that d0uchebag Tim LIE-weke, but don't we all expect that from those organizations?
It's insulting as a fan to listen to him talk as if cares about the success of team, when his actions are clear that he cares about himself. If he were straightforward about his ambitions, I for one wouldn't have a negative word to say. Has he been good for the league? OF COURSE. But don't kid yourself, he also thinks that American soccer fans are all complete idiots, or at least treats us as such.

LOL, B.A., though we disagree on perspective, i really did enjoy a good chuckle with your opening line or two. :)
Look, I don't think Beckham is a god, or a perfect Messiah for American soccer, let alone a perfect man, husband, player, captain, whatever. But even if he has some selfish motives for AC Milan move (like playing for England, etc)--I am not nearly as cynical as you. We still don't know the terms of the loan. I will agree that even if he comes back at the start of the season--but not for training camp--that doesn't sit so well with me. But it doesn't anger me, or say that his time here is all a wash. He might very well be about the "bottom line" of his wealth empire. And if that is ALL it was--and I hope not, but it could be--his being here is still a personal risk and STILL a boon to our sport that we few in the USA love--soccer. And I will be forever grateful to him for that. Well, "forever" may be a stretch, but "you feel me". :-)
Or not.

like him or not, he wants another world cup, so i can't really blame him for doing what he sees as necessary to give himself the best chance of making the england squad for 2010. Don Fabio essentially laid down the law or what is required to be called up, so that means Becks has to play somewhere from now until MLS 09 starts up. I say put your country before your club ... if he makes the england squad, more power to him.

MLS has one of the tightest finishes to the season but yet the biggest story is a possible loan for Beckham... I love the MLS but I hate the fact we are a bit of a joke... we dont take time off during international breaks, we dont schedule the final games on the same day at the same time but on THREE days and we cant wait 2 weeks to start discussing a "loan" that cannot happen until January anyways... MLS is taking attention away to a great finish to the season and would rather have Becks in the news for this...
