Braves backing off Padres demands

08:29 AM ET 10.26 | Whenever you have a quality 27-year-old pitcher like Jake Peavy being dangled in trade talks, there's going to be interest. The Braves appeared to be the best fit, but GM Frank Wrenn is backing off Kevin Towers's demands. The Astros, Cardinals, and Brewers (perhaps the best fit) will be out there. The Sox are waiting to see whether Peavy would erase them from his no-trade list, though he's not a huge priority.

As the RUMORS fly in in Milwaukee for a coach, the biggest story may be they are actually looking to keep CC Sabathia AND are now looking to be players in acquiring Peavy. Must be nice to have the $$$ and one of the best minor league cast of characters to use as bait.

The Braves don't really have any room to be backing out of demands when it comes to their entire pitching rotation plus bullpen. Make the deal happen and make another deal happen for other good guys. And middle relievers holy crap, Atlanta get your act together.

Peavy would be a great Christmas gift for any team. I don't care who says what, he's a legit No. 1 guy and usually a workhorse. And he's only 27.

Totally agree. I think the Cards are making a big mistake not going after him.

The Braves will get him, but i don't think we get him WITHOUT givin Hanson, Schafer and maybe Yunel Escobar. =[

I'd like to see the Phillies go after him, they'll have some money after jettisoning Eaton.

The braves need to get him even if we have to give up good prospects. Don't want to be like the yankees last year who hold on to the prospects and then they turn out to be crap. plus this guy is under contract for the next four years at a reasonable salary. I say give them a pitching prospect and an outfielder if they want it. just try to hold on to the 1B prospect (can't remeber his name) because I think there's a high chance that Kotchman is going to suck.

Hanson must, and will, remain untouchable. If we were one awesome pitcher away from being competitive, then I'd say make the trade. But we're not guys, stop fooling yourselves.

He should agree to a trade to the Red Sox if he wants to win at least 1 world series in 4 years the Sox have the foundation

October 26, 2008  03:53 PM ET

Frank Wren is gun shy after what happened to them with the Teixeira trade last year. They are afraid to give up prospects but this is different. They get a CY YOUNG winner for at least 4 years at a very affordable rate. They need an ace and they wont get another opportunity like this. Yeah they have money to spend, but AJ Burnett and Ryan Dempster are not the same as Jake Peavy. PULL THE TRIGGER, BRAVES!!!

Last year wasn't entirely Wren's fault but this year should be make or break for his success in Atlanta. Do we give up Escobar in the deal? Do we accept Khalil Greene if San Diego wants to offload him? Can Greene have a bounce back year or is he a bust?

Personally I'd rather trade Kelly Johnson if they want him and put Prado at 2nd next year.

I really dont want to give up Escobar. Frankly, if the Padres want Escobar, Hanson, AND Schafer, that is ridiculous. I agree that KJ is much more expendable than Escobar, but the Braves are gonna have to give up a lot to get a lot. Thats the name of the game nowadays.

The Braves can not give up Hanson, Offer Francoeur ,Lillibridge and, Jo-Jo Reyes and a minor league pitcher in the low minors, Then go get a power hitting outfilder and get another pitcher(trade or free agent) Like D Lowe. Please give Casey Kotchman a chance I think he will work out. Don't forget you can throw Scott Thorman in a trade

Im pretty sure the Brewers dont need any more coaches, but I hear they are in the market for a Manager.

i think wren wil he's best to get peavy and he know he will lost some of his( next wave ) for the braves if he gonna make the trade it will be like this: johnson, lillibridge, morton, reyes, thorman and brandon jones for peavy and relief pitcher not greene...

Peavy and Sabathia would make the Brewers one of the favorites in the NL. Especially with a more experienced, playoff tested team. If the Crew doesn't keep Sheets (which they shouldn't) they can throw that cash at Sabathia and trade a slew of talent (Weeks, Hall, Fielder) to the Pads for Peavy. By the way, I just woke up from a dream where I wrote this blog.
