Why Penn State benched Clark

Penn State took measures to protect the junior quarterback Daryll Clark after he sustained a concussion in Saturday's 13-6 win over Ohio State, sidelining him with the Nittany Lions behind by 3 points. Clark was hit on a 7-yard run play late in the third quarter, when he collided with Nader Abdallah, a 300-pound defensive tackle, and tackle Cameron Heyward, who is listed at 287 pounds. Abdallah walked off the field after the hit. Clark played seven more snaps before the drive ended, then he was removed. Teammates said he was visibly shaken up and wanted to re-enter the game, but was not allowed. "The decision was easy in terms of trying to ask what you would want for your kid, my kid, any kid in that kind of situation," Dr. Wayne Sebastianelli, Penn State's director of athletic medicine, said Sunday in a telephone interview. "We know the stakes are high, but we're pretty much dedicated to the preservation of an athlete's well-being." Asked if coaches resisted his decision to remove Clark, Sebastianelli said: "No one questioned it at all. We knew we had to find another way to win. That was it."

You could see Clark was disappointed to not be back in the game. It was the right decision, regardless of the final score. One issue is the word "concussion" does not seem like a big deal. If instead they used the term "brain injury", people would understand that is not just a minor issue. I'm sure Clark wanted to get back in there, but glad they took care of him.

This is why we're lucky to have 2 good QB's

No offense to PSU, but their best chance at a national championship is to slide into a lesser BCS bowl. Compare the USC victory to the PSU victory and tell me who you'd pick between PSU and USC. PSU certainly looks good, I am just sick of the Big Ten not being able to shake the reputation and choking in hte big game. Certainly there are many games to be played prior to Bowl season, and lowly UM demonstrated that you can get PSU out of their element (of course they can only do it for a half so the point is irrelevant)

Also compare the Oregon State game between the two as well then.

That was a hard hit, must be a pretty tough kid to have finished the series

Two ket points here: 1) you rightfully failed to mention the Oregon State game (by accident right) and 2). your "and lowly UM demonstrated that you can get PSU out of their element (of course they can only do it for a half so the point is irrelevant" totally negates itself.

So make a point only to prove your point wrong in the same sentance? Nice.

Bottom line is, OSU played a tremendous game on defense. Looking at teams 5 games apart isn't exactly fair. Seems that since the OSU-USC game, Pryor was 5-0. Glad style points aren't included in the W or L column...otherwise, that "impressive" win USC had over Arizona might knock them down a few. Oh wait, it did.

Ohio State played their best game of the year by far against the best competition. Penn State didn't fold to any degree. This was the Big 10 title game and PSU proved its merit, belonging amongst the elite of college football for this year.

I'm a bit confused as to why the back-up PSU QB was so heralded after the game. All he pretty much had to do was hand-off to Royster. That was it. Yeah, he scored the only TD, but it took him two QB sneaks to do it. He's no Clark. . .not even close and I thought it was HILARIOUS how Brent Musberger was trying to start a QB controversy during the broadcast and Herbstreit was so polite and smooth in telling Musberger that's he's a freaking idiot. I'm not sure I would've been so polite. The development of Clark by QB coach JayPa just may be good enough to keep him employed (somewhere) after his father retires. What I can't figure out is how/why Clark couldn't beat Morelli last year. Morelli was terrible.

I think PSU made the right decision to sit Clark, in a close game with Big 10 and national title implications. The stakes couldn't have been higher but the staff didn't bow to any external pressures.

Allow me to contrast this with the low-class move by Gary Pinkel to bring Chase Daniels in during the 4th quarter when up 48-0, simply to get Chase 300 yards for his Heisman campaign.

Winningest coach of all time vs One-season wonder.

Biminator - You can't compare the USC vs OSU / PSU vs OSU game.

Pryor didn't start, Beanie Wells didn't play, and the game was in CA. PSU beat OSU in Columbus at night with everyone playing. It was a great game and it shows that PSU is for real. You also have to look at the Oregon State game.

What's really confusing is that Musberger is MORE of a lusty buckeye than Herbstreit? That mf'er must have Jim Tressell and Archie Giriffin photos all over his wall.

On the plus side, I must commend Brent. He has done a nice job of not calling a play a TD when the kid is on the 45 yard line.

October 27, 2008  10:20 AM ET

After awhile on the bench being pissed, Clark came around and was cheering his teammates on...you have to like that about him as well as his skills on the field this year for PSU...let it be known, however, there is NO QB controversy at PSU!

If that's your reasoning then you need to look at both team's schedules...PSU never lost to an unranked conference opponent...you CAN'T ingnore that if you are talking eligiblilty for a National Championship game.....

October 27, 2008  10:59 AM ET

Clark looks pretty concussed in that picture, he cant even keep his left eye open. Clark is a G. I want to see PSU in the national championship.

Are you a ****? Do you not understand how the BCS national championship game works. Your credibility is shot, go away.

Bimanator.
You talk about the great USC, but neglect to state that they lost to Oregon State, whom was dismantled by PSU. You talk like a politician.

October 27, 2008  12:29 PM ET

wow, a sports team doing what's best for an athlete's health. What's next? Kudos to Penn State!

Yeah. Then compare the PSU victory over Oregon State to the USC victory over Oregon State....

I don't even know why USC is being mentioned in any national title conversations. They lost to an unranked opponent, and they may well lose to Cal, maybe even Notre Dame! I really hope to see PSU in the title game. For one, to bring some respect back to the Big Ten, and I would love to see it happen for JoePa. I'm a Buckeye fan, but I have to admit, I wasn't totally disappointed with them losing to PSU. They weren't getting back to the title game anyway, they would have landed in the Rose Bowl, and probably still will if PSU does play for the title.
