Namath, Maynard criticize Jets
While the Jets basked in the glory of their 1968 Super Bowl season, a few of those players who brought the franchise its only championship wondered about the state of the current Jets. Legendary quarterback Joe Namath questioned the Jets' offense Sunday and his wide receiver Don Maynard took a swipe at the Jets' current coach. Namath went on the television broadcast in the third quarter of the Jets' 28-24 win over the Chiefs and said he was concerned "about the overall concept of our team, not the quarterback, right now." "I know they are trying, but today they are making Kansas City look good," Namath continued. "A quarterback is gonna get hit, no doubt about that, but the accumulation of the bumps and bruises must have (Brett Favre) at the most fragile as at any point in his career." Maynard, Namath's favorite receiver, was more general. Before Sunday's game at the Meadowlands, he lamented the lack of experience among coaches in the NFL, including that of Jets head coach Eric Mangini. "You have 106 coaches in the NFC that's never played pro ball, you got 126 in the AFC that's never played pro ball," Maynard said. "You got 64 coaches that never played college football, so now you know why the knowledge of pro football has gone downhill. They don't even do what we did in offenses and defenses."

He maybe right about some of the coaching, but the complexity of todays game far surpasses when they played. His arguement at the end is just funny because they cant run as simple a package as they used to...

Granted they have played possibly 2 of the worst teams in the league the last couple of weeks.....but the D at least has started to show signs of improvement.
As far as offense....all the 'trick' formations an such-
it simply tells me that the coaching staff feels their players
cannot beat the other teams defense straight up &
they have to resort to gimmicks......THAT is frustrating

Don Maynard needs to think about what he said. Vince Lombardi perhaps the greatest NFL coach of all time never played pro ball... just HS and college. I can agree with his concern about the 64 coaches that never played in college, but not in the NFL.

Who do they insist on putting a microphone within 20 feet of Joe Namath? Newsflash...the 1970's are over and so is your relevance Joe. "Broadway Joe" has turned into "creepy old guy tha tries to kiss people in a drunken stupor" Joe. I guess by their reasoning that Bill Belichick(who I personally cannot stand, but must respect his coaching accomplishments) should not be coaching since he is a former player.

There's no doubt the Jets should be doing better. Didn't the Patriots say that even with Favre, it's the same Jets offense they've seen since Mangini took over? That's not football experience, that's common sense - you have a different QB, you should be playing offense differently.

Maynard and Namath's experience come from a different era - today's game is much different - they are both trying to be relavent but should relize the game has passed them by

Namath is still respected for the things he has done, but times have change, players have changed, the game has changed since he last stepped on the football field as a player.. time to come into 2008 and not be still living in 1968.
