Fulmer feels players support
The rumors, speculation and criticism surrounding Phillip Fulmer and his future are not affecting his players, the Tennessee coach said Sunday night. "I think they've really tried to rally and support the staff," Fulmer said. The approval rating certainly took a dip after UT's 29-9 loss to No. 2 Alabama on Saturday night in Neyland Stadium. It was the first time Fulmer has lost back-to-back games to the Crimson Tide in his 17 seasons as UT's coach. And it was another dominating victory by one of the Vols' main rivals. The results have created plenty of national media attention and have fired up a portion of the UT fan base, who has demanded change in recent years. As for this season, coaches said the outside chatter has not created ripples in the locker room and that there is no divisiveness or in-fighting. "We haven't had any off-the-field issues or those kinds of things that sometimes come when the players sense something," Fulmer said. Starting with Sunday night's late practice, the new goal for UT is to win out, become bowl eligible, and muster some sort of positive finish to an already disappointing season.

Fulmer's future may hinge more on the South Carolina game than anything. Lose another one to Spurrier, and they'll likely end up 6-6.
When you go 1-5 in a two year span against your three biggest rivals ('Bama, Georgia, and Florida), you won't get much support from the alums. And, worse still, considering that the 20-point margin this last weekend was the *closest* of the games in those five loses, it doesn't take a genius to see there's trouble on Rocky Top.

phil should have been fired since 2002. I lived in knoxville since 2000 and this team always plays not to lose. Well that catches up with you. I know he has a good record but the product on the field has always been pathetic. He won a national championship only because of his recruiting. if u have great players, u can have a basic 1+1 scheme and the talent is gonna cover for it. But now that he really has to coach, we can see how crappy he is. TN is scared of change and they might keep him for another 10 years.

I would hate to see Fulmer go. He's done so much for the UT program. It wasn't that long ago when Penn State alumni were calling for Joe Pa's head too ...

In fairness to Fulmer, there were some questionable calls (at best) which affected the outcome of the Alabama game.
A pass interference call on a Tennessee receiver at the end of the first half which probably prevented a Volunteers touchdown. The fumble recovery by Berry for a touchdown that was not allowed because the runner was ruled down (questionable at best).
The game was evenly matched for the most part because Alabama's offense with J.P. Wilson can only play with a lead. They are not capable of overcoming a 10+ points deficit or making a 4th quarter comeback.
I like Alabama but realize they are a frontrunner kind of team that needs fast starts and early leads to win games.

Hey Eugene - Just one question. "They are not capable of ovecoming a 10+ points deficit or making a 4th quarter comback." What do you base this on considering Bama THIS YEAR has only been behind on the scoreboard for a total of 1 minute and 13 seconds? Last year is history. This team is as different from last year as the Tennessee national championship team is from this years Tennessee comic review. We can agree the officiating was weak at best - - but it went both ways. Roll Tide.

Keep in mind Fulmer's reliance on his staff. Chavis & Cutcliffe have had a great deal to do with UT's success during Fulmer's tenure. Having lost Cutcliffe, Phil needed a QB guru (The Vols offenses don't work without top-shelf QBs.). Clawson came to the Vols with a record of success developing quarterbacks and offensive schemes in the "championship division" fka 1-AA. His inaugural year is shaping up to be a nightmare. Without "Counselor Cutcliffe," Crompton's been a head case come game time. If Clawson cannot coax notable performance from gunslinger Nick Stephens or one of the other QBs on the roster in the remaining games, his future with the Vols is closer to jeopardy than Fulmer's.

evenly matched?
who are you kidding?
ut couldn't score on 1st and goal from the 4.
only reason ut scored their lone touchdown was on back to back pass int calls only one of which "might" have been valid.
evenly matched indeed

I have heard rumblings since the beginning of the season and I believe Fulmer will step down before the season ends.

I think Fulmer deserves 1 more year. The defense is still strong. The offense has been impacted by the loss of Cutcliffe more than the loss of Ainge. Many other coaching changes have set this year up for a challenge. Give him one more year.

"I think they've really tried to rally and support the staff," Fulmer said.
You know, there's no sense in sassing the man who controls your playing time, and ultimately how much exposure you get leading up to the NFL draft... so let's not take the lack of negative comments as being a positive thing.
I'm watching this happen in Lincoln right now, a lot of kids are saying something completely opposite from what they said while Bill Callahan was still the coach.

That;s great his players like him, but its the ulumni and the athletic dept that pay his check to WIN. If his players really liked him they would play better. I said last week when Tenn. signed that #1 recruit that Fulmer needed to sign 21 others or he will be out of a job. Good BYE Fulmer, I am sure that he can find a job based upon his one national title 10 or so years ago.

Why doesn't T&R ask why USC is ranked so high in the BCS. They just keep moving up in the polls when they don't play anyone. I give you a example: USC's remaining teams on their schedule currently have combined record of 14 wins to 15 losses, when a team like Florida is ranked behind them play teams with a combined record of 23 wins to 8 losses, and this will not include the SEC Championship game if they get there. USC is very very overrated this year. USC would be 500 football team if they played in the SEC against Florida, Georgia, Bama, LSU
