Braves, Marlins working phones

There are no general managers at this World Series, but the phone lines have been abuzz, and it is no coincidence that so much of the off-the-field pre-winter conversations have revolved around the Braves and Marlins, both of whom are acknowledged to have the mother lode of young talent coming fast to a soon-to-be highly competitive NL East. With the free-agent market not open for business for another couple of weeks, news of the San Diego Padres testing the trade waters for their righthanded ace, Jake Peavy, has baseball's hot stove smoking furiously. Peavy has listed the Braves, Cubs, Astros, Dodgers and Cardinals as the only teams for which he will waive his no-trade clause. Of them, only the Braves and possibly the Dodgers have the surplus of quality young talent the Padres are looking to get back, and it is highly unlikely they would trade him within their own division. Like the Braves, the Marlins have a bumper crop of young talent just about ready for big league delivery, most notably Southern League MVP first baseman Gaby Sanchez (.404 OBP, 92 RBI), who's slated to replace Jacobs, and outfielders Curtis Maybin and John Raynor. Olsen figures to bring the biggest return, what with the scarcity of quality starting pitching, while Jacobs has drawn interest from a number of American League clubs, in particular the Kansas City Royals.

Trade Peavy to the Marlins....they could use some pitching

October 27, 2008  05:55 AM ET

Right now, The Braves are really looking good in sealing the deal. peavy for schafer or heyward. Plus atlanta is closer to alabama...win-win for peavy.

So wait I'm confused......is Florida in the hunt for Peavy as well?

October 27, 2008  09:46 AM ET

can't get rid of Schafer, the guys a 5-tool guy who will be the Braves everyday CF in a year or two. and Heyward is a stud, the Braves need to stick with what got them to the postseason for 14 straight years, Pitching and Developing their OWN Draft Picks

October 27, 2008  10:54 AM ET

I disagree with the article on one thing... I think the Cardinals do have the minor league talent to make a serious run at Peavy (if they want to).

Agreed, however if they could part with say just Heyward, I'd do it. Hell the Phillies have Greg Golson waiting in the wings, same five-tool ability; I'd trade him in a heartbeat for a young sutd like this. Can't mortgage your future to live today, but getting rid of an OF (hate to say it but they grow on trees with respect to other positions) for a guy that could become the foundation for a solid rotation that recalls back to when the Braves were dominant in the 90's.

Agreed, M-a-r-s. I've said it on these posts before recently, but the Cards could package Rasmus, Anderson and one of the young starting pitchers they have, and make a very legitimat offer to the Pads.

And....they should do it.

Your skintone seems a bit unnatural? Perhaps an application of face paint?

Perhaps shoving a pair of bowling balls up your *** we seem natural to you? Thoughts?

Now when he says "we" is he referring to himself AND the bowling balls? 'Cause if that's the case then I think one of us is definitely on the wrong website.
