Why Notre Dame passed on field goals

The wind was the biggest reason why coach Charlie Weis went for it on fourth-and-long three times during Notre Dame's 33-7 victory Saturday night at Washington. Weis said Sunday that he and his staff determined before the game that when driving into the wind, they wanted the offense to get inside the 25-yard line before attempting a field goal. When the wind was at the Irish's backs, Weis wanted to get inside the 30 before sending sophomore kicker Brandon Walker onto the field. ''Brandon is just starting to get his confidence, and the last thing I want to do just when a guy is getting his confidence is have a guy kick a 48-yard field goal into the wind,'' Weis said. Walker, who had made two of eight field goals before Saturday, made 28- and 42-yard kicks against Washington.

what's the point of this article? Everyone knew why already.

Charlie Weis is FAT! There another news flash about the fightless Irish is now officially released

Two teams 95% of the nation couldn't care less about.

"Brandon is just starting to get his confidence, and the last thing I want to do just when a guy is getting his confidence is have a guy kick a 48-yard field goal into the wind"....Weis.
LMAO...The coach had NO confidence in the kicker. That is why he did not let him kick from more than chip shot area. So, the theory is that you build up a guys confidence by making it painfully obvious you have no confidence in him....Got it coach.

October 27, 2008  10:45 AM ET

yet here you are Truth, still commenting on ND articles every single day they're up here... and it's not true that people couldn't care less, while 95% of the country may not care for ND, they still care what happens to ND, and I think that's quite obvious to every sports fan.

October 27, 2008  11:08 AM ET

Hey truth, don't forget to add your team. Well I guess alot of people are talking about meeeeeeechigaaaaan, just not in a good way. But, hey two little 11 teams at 2-6 should be something to look forward to this weekend! (I'll pray for Prudue to get that tough 3rd win)

Then why did you click on to Comments and read these, and then feel the need to comment?
You are a great example of why the media keeps publishing ND stories; because even those ND-Haters read them!

October 27, 2008  11:42 AM ET

Besides the obvious of wind and confidence, I think Charlie had a little alternative motive. I'm sure he wanted to really stick it to Ty since most of the haters always felt that Ty was a better coach. I guess we know now "The Truth".

October 27, 2008  12:36 PM ET

In the place of this article should be one talking about how really Really REALLY bad Washington is, and how Ty Willingham drove this once prominent Program into the ground. Notre Dame whipping them is just icing on the cake, and I can't believe TY has a job today.

Go Irish

Ty Willingham appears to be a decent person who is not suited to coach a Division I football program. He's perhaps suited for a Division II or III situation, where personal qualities and teaching life's lessons are more important than winning. Also, he may be a decent Asst Coach somewhere, but he doesn't seem to have the charisma that the coach of a Top 25 college program needs to attract both elite assistants and high school recruits.
The Trustee Executive Committee at ND that made the decision to replace him after three years were individuals who understood the lack of leadership and the likely dismal future, as exemplified by what has happened at Washington. They wanted Urban Meyer, but he wanted the easy recruiting of the SEC with its lack of academic standards, football dorms and courses etc., so they settled for Charlie Weis. He was, and still is, and unproven college level coach. He may know football, but he didn't know how to motivate adolescents once he recruited them. Maybe he's getting it now, another year will tell. He has to win strong next season with the talent he has brought in, or it will be time for find a coach who can motivate college talent. Charlie can go back to X's and O's in the NFL where stroking the talent is not a major resume requirement.

You cannot argue with Charlie Weis's ability to develop quarterbacks. Tom Brady was a quarterback who shared snaps his senior year with a freshman and was drafted in the 6th round, now he is a 3 time super-bowl quarterback and considered the cream of the NFL. Brady Quinn was a 2-3 star recruit he turned into a Heisman candidate and first round draft choice. Jimmie Clausen is developing into a fine quarterback and next year could be among the nations elite. Have you seen his arm and accuracy? He had two dropped TD's this weekend on perfectly thrown deep passes. His ability to read defenses and to handle the no-huddle as a sophomore are very impressive. Notre Dame with Charlie Weis will be Quarter-Back U.

Agree; he can teach a quarterback.
The problems appear to be in motivating the rest of the team. This year we are beginning to see some play with emotion and confidence, and by next year he will either have learned how to coach student athletes, or will have to go back to coaching men who's job it is to play his way or else bye bye.

October 27, 2008  02:55 PM ET

Weis won't need to be a great coach. the school is going to "maufacture" its way back into the BCS picture with weak scheduling and this barnstorming fiasco... i bet every school wishes it did not have to play any real away games. by fixing it so 1/2 of its away games are at neutral sites and continuing to play the midddle of the pack big ten teams (except for Mich.) they should be able to get back inot the BCS and get throttled once again.

I love it when the ND Haters rant on! They really let ND get under their skin.
Enjoy the game, don't live your life around it. Not worth getting so upset about such a trivial matter as college football.

Hey dooshbag, you just disproved your point. ND only has one game at a neutral site next year and WSU agreed to the game, no one put a gun to thier head did they?

Why should they play OSU when they can play USC, a team that can actually win big games?

I count 7-8 quality teams on that schedule, which are made years in advance, ND has no idea how good each team is going to be in 2-3 years, or how good they themselves will be.

October 27, 2008  04:04 PM ET

this year ND will also be chasing its record in the following: in its "return to glory year" of 2006 3 of its 9 wins came against teams who either played the game with a coach who had been fired already or would be fired end-of-season (Stanford, Mich St. and UNC).This year so far Washington's coach has just stepped down and Syracuse's coach will not be much far behind..one more and the record wil be tied!!!

Wrong, Charlie pulled his starters at the end of the third quarter and all offensive plays in the 4th quarter, except for one pass, were running plays. Charlie made no effort to run up the score. How many other teams on saturday pulled their starters, how many teams obviously ran up the score on their opponents? ND showed Ty and Washington respect on how they handled the game when it was out of reach.

Sometimes I wonder why some of these hairball comments, coughed up, by the bottom rungers of life ever get past the sensors, is it just because ND has a bit of class? Then again it could be as simple as sewing and cooking classes are over and the meds for their PMS haven't kicked in yet!

The coaches point was....''Brandon is just starting to get his confidence, and the last thing I want to do just when a guy is getting his confidence is have a guy kick a 48-yard field goal into the wind,'' Weis said.
