Al Sharpton calls Plaxico column 'racist'

An outraged Rev. Al Sharpton is calling for the New York Post to take immediate action to address a column in Monday's editions that he called "blatant racism" and a "media lynching." Post columnist Steve Serby began his column in Monday's editions with "Good for Tom Coughlin. Good for Coughlin for tightening the noose around Plaxico Burress." Burress has been fined and benched by the Giants for infractions including tardiness and missing practices. On Saturday, the wide receiver skipped a treatment for his neck, and was benched during the first quarter of the Giants' win in Pittsburgh Sunday. In criticizing Burress, Serby used a racially loaded and offensive term, Sharpton told the Daily News. "To make such a blatant racist statement about an African-American football player with a neck injury is completely unacceptable," Sharpton said. "Clearly, the racial connotation is very disturbing. ... This is the verbal reflection of a hanging noose." Sharpton said he was willing to consider that Serby did not intend to make a racially loaded statement. But the impact of the columnist's words troubled Sharpton regardless of the intent. "Intent certainly makes a difference," Sharpton said. "As long as they understand the effect."

Wow, that made it pass the editor.

****? Aughh....hellll no....racism. Man the only racism that exists....is the mind. THink about it. Get over the idea...people. It is all about societies divisoons on wealth. Some people have their **** together ans some do not. Most do not. So don't be a doughnut. The idea of this or that....left long ago. 100 years ago? The sixties....40 years ago? C'mon - BE REAL. Get with the game plan. I see equality everywhere - I look. There is no racism. If there is....perhaps you should move to another location?

Plaxico has a reall pissss poor attitude. It's a bad situation and many boys do not believe it.....the list is endless. You grow up or you are Sheet in the fan. Especially - athletes.

Why don't they give a blurb when they refer to someone else's quotes/articles? It's hard to realize the whole INs and OUTs of this, whether Rev Sharpton is flapping his gums again or if he has a legitimate beef...

October 28, 2008  06:19 AM ET

Bad choice of words, why the media still uses hanging noose references is beyond me, its only going to get you in trouble.

October 28, 2008  06:38 AM ET

Al Sharpton IS "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" I really find it hard to stomach and he undermines legitimate complaints of bigotry with his self serving, self aggrandizing, and patiently ridiculous accusations. ???Give him enough rope and he???ll hang himself??? is a common expression, and isn???t about race any more than ???Like putting lipstick on a pig??? is about pitbulls???er, I mean dufus candidates. I suppose he will be screaming about the Boy reference too. Pretty sad when there are so many real issues.

Bad choice of words for sure. Somewhere there is an editor that got his butt chewed or let go. That is all they need to apologize for though. I agree, good for Coughlin. Burress is a me, me, me, me problem. There is no racism here.
Can you believe we are commenting on what Al Sharpton thinks on a sports site?

I really hate when all that great punctuation goes down the drain like that.

October 28, 2008  06:44 AM ET

That Duke Lacrosse team is still looking for an apology Al.

October 28, 2008  07:22 AM ET

The assistant DA in Dutchess County NY, the guy who was accused of raping Tawana Brawley, the guy who had his life ruined, is also still waiting for an apology.

Great, great point.

This is a non-story and Al Shaprton is just looking for some press. You can't claim everything to be racist. Racism does exist all over this country, but this was just a writer's bad choice of words, not racism.

October 28, 2008  07:45 AM ET

Has Sharpton ever apologized for his accusations?

October 28, 2008  07:47 AM ET

Rev Al has ZERO credibility. Not even black people support him anymore.
Go away fatso and tak your valour sweat suits with you.

I think, historically.....more white people have been hanged than black people....even, most likely, in this country, since it was our primary method of execution for hundreds of years.....so, you know....as a white person, I demand an apology from The Post.

You can't compare executions to lynchings. Hanging someone because they were guilty of a crime is not the same as hanging someone because they look different than you.

good lord.....

October 28, 2008  07:49 AM ET

Did I miss something? I didn't realize that only blacks were hung. I would be willing to bet that there were way more white people hung by a noose than blacks, get over yourself!!!!
