Maddon isn't buying Blanton's story

Manager Joe Maddon heard Phillies pitcher Joe Blanton's explanation that the curious dark splotch on the bill of his cap during Game 4 was "just dirt from the ball." And, the day after raising the issue, Maddon said he wasn't buying it. "Umm, I don't think so," Maddon said Monday. "That's very unusual. How many guys have that mark on their hat?" Maddon was measured in his actions Sunday, pointing out the spot to home-plate umpire Tom Hallion but refraining from making any accusations or asking Hallion to check Blanton for illegal substances. Hallion, according to MLB officials, also would have had the option of checking Blanton himself.

I'm surprised they didn't make a bigger stink over this at the time. It's too late now to do anything about it.

They didnt make a big stink because it was nothing. Maddon knows it was nothing.

Then why the heck are they still talking about it? I guess it's because it's a Florida paper and they're trying to make themselves feel better.

You gotta wonder what that stuff was, though. Certainly wasn't "dirt from the ball." So why would Blanton lie about it? Who stood to gain???

You ever see Delaware mud? that was delaware mud pure and simple.

Plus, seriously...you're a pitcher...you want to put some rosin somewhere to use during the game.

Where should you put it...hrmm..where oh where....how about the MOST visible spot you can find?

Hey and eat some of that rosin...maybe it will give you popeye like powers to hit balls over the wall.

Why would he stick it on the brim of his hat?

Do you think that was a new hat?

How many hats do you think he has?

Maddon looks like some Star Trekie in that picture.

You may wish to check out the Sharpton NFL thread, comrade. It's right up your alley.

Maddon is grasping for straws and has a passive aggressive mentality. Not a pleasant human being. He could only manage new comers who have no choice but to tow his line .

This is the second day in a row they've posted on this story, yet nary a word about the first suspended game in World Series history. LAME!

Looks like he is the love child of Yoda in that photo. I say a DNA test is in order.

There were several close ups of Blanton during the game. From the first inning I noticed the hat was obviously a well worn hat. It had sweat stains on it which means to me it had been worn for quite some time. I'd say there's a 99% probability it was freakin dirt. If he wanted to do something about it he should have done so when he had the chance now the game is over shut yer trap Madden...you got out played and out hit quit crying.

he probably didn't make too big of a stink b/c perhaps a few Rays players are doing something similar....otherwise, I can't see why the umps wouldn't just go out and check it. Same thing with Kenny Rogers a few years ago. If its that obvious then why wouldn't the umps do something right then an there to clean the air.

oh...and I didn't know that voldemort was coaching the Rays

All good points, plus I saw that same mark during the regular season and the beginning of the playoffs. I just attributed it to him being a dirty hillbilly (redundant I know).

I've been reading in the media that Joe Maddon is a very smart manager who really knows the game of Baseball. Then I heard about his complaint that some "mysterious" substance was on Joe Blanton's cap when he pitched against the Rays! As if that muddy spot was the reason that the Phillies hit four home runs in that game and completely crushed the Rays. As if that muddy spot was the reason that the Rays didn't score eleven runs against Blanton to come back and win the game. Gee whiz, Mr. Einstein Maddon, I thought the Rays lost that game because (1) the 3rd & 4th hitters in your lineup were hitless; (2) your starter was uncharacteristically wild; (3) YOU - the Manager - threw gasoline on the fire with your choice of relievers; (4) your defensive play was shakey; (5) Your young hitters were over-anxious and were swinging at the pitchers' pitches, not waiting for good pitches to hit. Mr. Maddon, you are too smart for me. Golly, I'll have to tell Charley Manuel to put that dirty smudge on the caps of his whole pitching staff next season so the Phillies' record will be 162 - 0 and they will become the first team to go undefeated for an entire season! Thank you so much for this valuable info!
