Suns GM under pressure

A dangerous season lies ahead, and with heightened competition in the perilous Western Conference, the Suns have little margin for error. In some ways, general manager Steve Kerr has been set up to fail by the short-term decisions that defined and derailed the past four seasons, ranging from Mike D'Antoni's short bench to the lack of player development, from tight fiscal guidelines to the high-flying style that was good enough to break your heart over and over again. The Suns needed fundamental change. Everyone knows it. They needed some defensive awareness and real accountability. They needed someone who would make Amare Stoudemire play defense, and not just talk about it. But if these Suns flame out, Kerr will go down as the guy who messed up a good thing.

I would sign Chris Mullin from the Warriors as a GM than Steve Kerr. I think Kerr should go back to be a commentator. Anyway, it should be interesting to see how Porter can change the Sun's style of play, at least on the defensive end.

Poor Steve Kerr!
It sounds as if the Suns franchise is turning into an impatient franchise, where you either defeat all the competition, or find yourself out of a job. Maybe it's the dry heat of the desert that's driving them crazy.
By the way, Simcel is way off - Kerr is just as good as Mullin. Mullin's best move would be to stay at Golden State, where he's a longtime fan favorite. The Warriors need to change their president (and owner, if possible).

Kerr and any other GM are always on the hot seat. He is moving in the right direction and is really working hard to make sure that the Suns go into the Defensive team direction that he foresees. Offense was always there. Defense was the only thing missing. The man in the middle was always the missing part of the Suns. Shaq was the best center they can get at that position even though he was getting old. Shaq will still command attention at both ends of the court. Shaq can still stop any center in the West right now.

October 28, 2008  09:03 AM ET

Steve Kerr is tied to Shaq. If Shaq deems to be a miserable failure it's going to be Kerr's downfall for going gaga over the guy.

True-
but what did they really give up for shaq?
Nash's window is closing & other than TOTALLY blowing
things up....what else could they have done?

If shaq keeps his mouth shut on court & at the BUFFET
rebounds, defends a little and if Amare is confident & Healthy
this team will be very good

October 28, 2008  10:21 AM ET

ker ruined this team. Shaq was already done when wade lead him to another ring in miami. He also has never been able to guard duncan so why did kerr think he can suddenly do it now?

I disagree; unless you call repeated elimination from the playoffs, "a good thing." The Suns have needed a center for years, and have been trying force Stoudemire into the position. D'Antoni refused to address the defense--Kerr is playing the hand he's been dealt.

October 28, 2008  11:04 AM ET

Kerr should be on the hot seat. He brought in Shaq who is clearly at the end of his career and lost a coach that had won 55, 61, 54 and 62 games during the last 4 years. If they fall apart this year it is because of Kerr.

All your points are untrue-

1) 'done' ??? give me 10 centers TODAY that are better.....
if you can't that puts him in the TOP THIRD -

2) guarding Duncan????
Duncan is a PF- Shaq is a CENTER......different positions
it would be FOOLISH for shaq to man-up timmy
as it would be foolish for him to man up a guard

3) kerr-
What better trade was out there?
Nash's window is closing- 2 years MAX-
when both are done- they'll still ahve AMARE in his prime to
build around.....he had no choice

1. You are right there are not 10 centers who are better. But the Suns were doing pretty good without him. The only reason they did this trade was because of the Gasol trade.

2.Duncan played both positions in the playoffs so Shaq was assigned to guard him some of the time. If he can't adjust to the changing NBA game where centers are no longer big lumbering 7 footers who have no outside game then he is by definition DONE. Plus he was brought in specifically to match up with players like Duncan and Gasol in the playoffs.

3. Sure they can build around Amare, that's if Amare sticks around to rebuild. And again, they were doing pretty good without this trade. Sure Marion was a little unhappy but they were still on top of the West when the trade went down.

October 28, 2008  11:39 AM ET

The Suns aren't toast is they don't win this year. They'll just have to start over, from a pretty good base: Stoudamire will be there, as will Bell. Diaw will need to step up or be traded (honestly, he should be traded - people still think he's good while he's really not). Barbosa is nice to have around. Dragic may or may not be good. But what will hold them back is Sarver's insistence that they sell draft picks. Wouldn't it be nice to have a couple of those players Portland bought on your roster now, Bob?

October 28, 2008  12:53 PM ET

as much as i hate to say it i couldnt agree more. i understand where steve wants to go with this team, i mean the guy has rings we're all aware of that. even tho the suns were not the traditional low post team, they were exciting and always one of the best teams on and off the court. and i honestly believe Sarver is an idiot. i dont know where he got the money to buy this team but he sould not own any franchise. the dude traded rajon rondo, rudy fernandez and all of our other draft pciks away until 2010, except for lopez. not only that, he refused to resign joe johnson the summer before he got traded, and he was asking for less than what we're paying Diaw right now. i hate sarver

You're wasting your breath. Many of the posters here are just fans. They don't really know the game. Therefore they can't comprehend that since the trade Stoudemire's scoring average is up 4 points a game, the Suns rebounding has gone up, shooting percentages have gone up. Most refuse to accept that D'Antoni was the problem. Shaq still commands a double-team. He is an excellent passer out of the post. Why was it that the ball never went inside to take advantage of this. Why didn't this team play defense? Shaq and the trade are simply the easiest targets when lack of knowledge won't reveal a better answer.

- doing 'pretty good' ....what does that mean?
did they win a championship or the west without him? NO.

as far as him being a lumbering beast-
he never could guard quick PF's in his hey-day....
and sure the line between a PF & center is blurred.
but shaq defends the BASKET- he guards who plays down low

as far Amare- we don't know yet- but we do know they can
offer the most $$$. ...he strikes me as a $ first guy

Once again, lack of knowledge makes it easier to blame Kerr. I say he's just playing the hand he's been dealt.

Kerr single handly changed the face of the franchise in just one season. Shaq, D'Antoni, Marion need i go on

I am not saying its bad but he will be remembered for it regardless

Suns are have essecially gone "all in" for these next two years to use a poker term. Suns feel Shaq gives them a better chance at a title than Marion. (interior defense and rebounding) If it does not work in the next two years, (I mentioned this on the LeBron to NY post) the Suns have $40mil coming off the books and can go after another big name free agent (Le Bron or Wade) or a number lesser All Star caliber players to put around Amare. Regardless, Kerr is not really on the hot seat as he is very good friends with Sarver. Whether that's good or bad, we'll have to wait and see. Let's see what this team can do before we start making assumptions though.

If you think they are winning a championship with him you are out of your mind. I can tell you this, before he showed up they knew who they were and embraced it. When they got him last year they lost their identity. At least they got close to the finals before. With Shaq they were out in the first round. I love Shaq, he's one of the best centers of all time, but this was a bad trade. The guy is clearly on the decline but Kerr thought they had to do something to match the Gasol move. I hope they do end up proving me wrong, but I think this move was bad. Kerr should have kept the team as it was until after the playoffs. They could have had a better match up in the first round. If they failed then he could do all the tinkering he wanted to do without being on the hot seat. I don???t think D???Antoni was a problem either, it wasn???t his decision to let Joe Johnson leave, or to keep trading draft picks or to sign a guy who didn???t fit into his system half way through the season. The GMs and owners did this to the franchise, not D???Antoni.
