Singletary down on Martz's offense

Shaun Hill will be the 49ers' starting quarterback for the Arizona game on Nov. 10 as the team goes into its bye week reeling from five straight defeats while transitioning to an interim head coach. Earlier in the day, coach Mike Singletary said he had not made a decision on his quarterback but by late Monday afternoon, after talking with offensive coordinator Mike Martz and informing the players involved, he named Hill the starter. Martz was responsible for bringing J.T. O'Sullivan to the 49ers after the two were together in Detroit last season. Going with Hill represents for Singletary repudiation of Martz's judgment and, in a larger sense, his offense. No one else in the NFL has fumbled as many times as O'Sullivan, thrown as many interceptions (11) or been sacked as often (32). While saying he loves Martz's offense, "I really do," Singletary at the same time seems to be moving away from his offensive coordinator's preferred method of moving the ball.

Just like the "Mike and Mike show"......stay tuned.

October 28, 2008  08:57 AM ET

Sounds like a lot of the Buddy Ryan school of coaching may have rubbed off on him...He may want to keep taht part in check with the public...Or else win a lot of games in a short period of time...

Doesn't sound like Martz and Singletary will be very long-lasting.

Except for the interceptions, fumbles, penalties and sacks...what's not to like about Air Martz?? Any idiot could look @ their record and see....Whoops we suck, never mind!

Sincerely,

Mike Martz

mike will be successful given time and the players.

He will be successful regardless. His players should buy into his ideals and realize they will be better for following him. I don't know that he'll have a winning record this year, but he can weed out the bad players and start something good.

eh? if they fire him next week, i doubt he'll be in the HOF with 2 head coaching decisions. I'm willing to stand by the fact, mike needs time. and its his time. he should have been given a head coach position sometime in the past couple of years.

As HC, he's got to take control because he's the one who will either get blamed or toasted - go on Mike and make the club yours - you still have fans out here

October 28, 2008  10:14 AM ET

O'Sullivan has been dreadfull and this could be the spark that the team needs. They need a fire lit under their tushes (I have a daughter to I am watching my language). I loved him as a player and I am loving him as a coach!

October 28, 2008  10:19 AM ET

Screw Garrett. I wish the 'Boys bring him over to Dallas as a HC next year.

October 28, 2008  10:22 AM ET

Me think Singletary is an example of a great player and a good coach. I think he will be a better D coordinator than a head coach though. Just my opinion

finally

The difference between Singletary and Martz is that Martz loves to air it out and Singletary wants Gore to get 25 carries a game. Singletary wants to win old school Bears style by pounding the ball. I see the Niners drafting, trading or picking up a big back in free agency to alterneate with Gore. Then doing the same to get an actual NFL QB. After that they need to get atleast one good go to receiver. They will probably trade down in the draft to aquire additional picks. The O-line is pretty good overall and they are not old by any means. I just wonder if they will got to the 4-3 from the 3-4 now that Singletary is the man.

What do they have to lose? preseason started off as QB competition between Smith and Hill, then Martz brought in O???Sullivan, end of any competition, JTO was the starter, knew how to run Martz system, seemed to do well but continued to make plenty of mistakes, interceptions, fumbles, but as Singletary sees it, the experiment is over, done, season is lost, give Hill his due after all he did get that raise, and that wasn't to sit his butt down. I have this gut feeling too, if Singletary is retained as HC, Martz may be gone as OC, Samurai Mike brings in his kind of people, system, to run, end of the Mike Nolan era, as say, the 49ers might not win but with Singletary, they???ll sure be entertaining, Samurai Mike, I like the sound of that, I just hope V Davis got the msg, and everyone else, time to be a team. Dallas? Wrong thread dude:p

I like Singletary as a head coach he know these players, and he not going to tolerate stupid action on the field that can coast your team the game. It needs to be said and let players know he's the head coach and it can't just be about me it's about the team. You have to like this about your coach, my foptball coach in high school was the same way.

pretty angry guy- who doesn't understand the media
you can actually see why he's never had a head coaching job

ps- i like his fire- but it just doesn't work today

October 28, 2008  11:22 AM ET

Only problem with the "Martz" system is that team has no decent QB or Wr's to run a spread offense

and until ownership is replaced they have nothing to go on in San Fran
