Flyers keeping No. 1 pick

Eighteen-year-old defenseman Luca Sbisa will remain with the Flyers for now, general manager Paul Holmgren said last night. Sbisa, the club's No. 1 selection in the June draft, is part of the Flyers' second defensive pair and was recently inserted on the power-play unit. Holmgren said Sbisa was playing "beyond his years. I like the way he carries himself." As of yesterday afternoon, the Flyers - whose defense has been ravaged by injuries - had still been thinking of sending Sbisa to junior hockey.

He looked pretty good the one time I saw him against the Pens.

They should keep him up with the bigs. I haven't seen much of him, but what I have seen he's looked good. He seems to be adjusting well.

Always dodgy leaving the young kids up with the big club, but this may work out, Hell, nothing else is going too well for them right now

If the boy can play a man's game, why handicap him by sending him to the minors?

October 28, 2008  11:58 AM ET

How much ice is the kid seeing? Would he be better off playing more in juniors?

October 28, 2008  01:12 PM ET

He's an outstanding skater who plays like an experienced seasoned veteran. He's not afraid to hit or be hit. It's hard to believe he's eighteen when you see him play. I'm usually not in favor of keeping a kid this young up with the big club but he is something special.

Good choice by the flyers. He's playing like a top 4 defenseman right now and when Parent and Jones come back, they can either keep him as their #5 d-man or send him to the phantoms to get him more playing time. Either way flyers have a young puck moving defenseman for a long time.

Now that the team has commited to him, I think he IS their #5.

The only things I'd be careful about if I were the Flyers are these:

1)It's early in the season and a lot of players have started out slow. Will Sbisa still look good later in the year when the Ovies and Genos of the League get rolling.

2)82 games is a long and griding schedule. Most young players feel the effect of that kind of season and really struggle at the end, particularly Dmen.

Somehow I don't see Lasse Kukkonen or Andrew Alberts improving between now and the end of the year either. But I do see your point.

Rewtown, they can't send him to the Phantoms. That's why it is such a big deal that they keep him in the NHL. A player who is eligible for juniors can only play 9 games before it counts against the teams cap, and they can't send him back. If a player is taken from a North American junior league, like Sbisa who was drafted from the WHL, he can't be sent to the AHL in his first year after being drafted. If they keep him past the 9 games limit, he's stuck on the NHL team whether he's playing or a healthy scratch if his game goes to hell. He has been very impressive from what I've seen. The only question I have is whether he will hold up for the long 82 games or more if the Flyers make the playoffs.

Every day this kid looks better & better. His decision making is only going to improve with time (quicker reads of the ice) and he's surely gonna fill out physically, too. So between him and Coburn seems they've got a coupla young studs in the stable for quite a few years to come, IMHO. However, "your actual mileage may vary..."

Sbisa has been getting 15-20 minutes a game, which is a considerable amount for a rookie D-man....The more this kid plays....the better he'll get....He's quick....he'll make quicker decisions....he's a very mobile defenseman who doesn't mind throwing his weight around....He's only 18....he's still got some growing up to do....

The AHL rules are that a player cannot be put on a team if he's under 20....Sbisa's only 18....it's either NHL or they return him to juniors....so it's a tough choice because the defense is so thin with no real decent choices on the Phantoms....
