Kenshin Kawakami, a 33-year-old righthanded pitcher, is most likely going to make a jump to the major leagues for the 2009 season as a free agent. Sports Nippon is reporting that the Red Sox are one of the teams that is interested in his services. As an ace of the Chunichi Dragons, he went 9-5 with 2.30 ERA last season and also pitched in the Beijing Olympics for the Japanese team. His career record is 112-72 with 3.22 ERA in 257 games during his 11 seasons with the Dragons and he was a major contributor when the Dragons won Japan Series in 2007. Kawakami's best pitch is cut-fastball and is comparable to Hiroki Kuroda of the Dodgers.

I wonder if they would start someone like him right away, and if so, who's the odd man out? Clearly, Wakefield IMO. Wake to the pen?

Can they get him, CHEAP???33 years old??

33 in Japanese years is like 22 in American years. :) Have you seen a Japanese senior citizen? They don't age.

I agree. What happened to this great farm system and all the prospects? Now the Sox are shopping in Asia again? My guess is that the Sox took a page out of the Yankees books to over inflate the talent level of their farm system.

That being said, they still have a good 1,2,3 in Lester, Dice K and Beckett - although Beckett's performance this year is troublesome.

Where in the world is superstar Clay Buckholz?

October 28, 2008  10:12 AM ET

What's going to happen to Buchholz? He still is a good pitcher and he could be the number 5 or 6 and if the Sox go after Kenshin Kawakami that means Wakefield is the odd man out. If I were Sox I would pick up a pitcher in free agent. If you get this guy I only use him as bullpen help, and what about Masterson do you put him back as a starter next season? He was pretty good as a starter.

I'm no rickshaw driver, but their foray back into the Asian market raises my curiousity, too.

The Red Sox still have a great farm system, half of the team this season was farm system guys that came up from the farm system.
