Angels keeping Vlad, Lackey

The Angels exercised the options on the contracts of ace pitcher John Lackey for $10 million and star outfielder Vladimir Guerrero for $15 million, SI.com has learned. The decision to retain both players at a reasonable cost is not a surprise, but the Angels are expected to try to lock up Lackey to a long-term deal. Guerrero had an off year and his knees looked somewhat worrisome this year, but the contract gave the Angels another year to decide whether to sign him long term. The Angels are going to try hard to sign free agent first baseman Mark Teixeira to a multi-year deal, AL sources said. Teixeira is believed to seek about $200 million on a 10-year deal. The Angels may also be in the bidding for star free agent pitcher CC Sabathia. They wouldn't mind retaining Francisco Rodriguez, their record-setting closer, but appear unlikely to come close to meeting K-Rod's asking price of $75 million over five years.

Put a fork in Guerrero...he's done. I don't think he will have a big year again. The Lackey deal makes some sense. They need to sign Manny this offseaon

Manny will only help your team initially, say half a season. Then Manny will be, well Manny. Keep 'em both I mean the Angels did so well with them, why not?

Vlad is on the backside of his career, I can see manny as a DH but he will want to much $$$$

October 29, 2008  05:50 AM ET

K-Rod will be gone for sure. So they could bring back Lackey and Vlad IF the price is right.

October 29, 2008  08:47 AM ET

Vladimir's recent A-Roditis has to be some cause for concern.

October 29, 2008  10:27 AM ET

Vlad's got the mobility of a rigamorticized hooker and the stick-to-itiveness of a Danny Bonnaduce

October 29, 2008  10:32 AM ET

How UNBELIEVABLY smart is Angel management with these
two contracts......10 mil for Lackey? 15 for Vlad ?
that's peanuts in this market

Even if vlad isn't the same-
he hit 300 last year & had 27 homers...that's not too shabby

agree. And that was never more evident in the playoff game against Boston when he tried to advance to third on that bloop over Youk's head. He was thrown out and he wasn't 4 steps off second. Watching him run was painful. Looked like he was running in 4 feet of water.

and his age is catching up to his approach at the plate. Younger guys can be more agressive and swing like he does, but not when you get older.

I'd put the money on Lackey - he's a stud.

But Vlad is on the downside and the slope for a player like him is steep. that .300/27HR could easily turn into .280/20...do you really want to play $15MM for that?

October 29, 2008  11:26 AM ET

manny being manny comment is getting old . Bottom line he's is one of the greatest hitters of all time . And any team with the exception of Boston would love to have him in their lineup .

Not Philly buddy. I'd rather have Pat the Bat for a lot less and get a lot more in terms of fielding and throwing.

Vlad pounds the ball, but is not disciplined. He is a great hitter, when he connects...

for a one year option pick-up.....ABSOLUTELY

he 'only' struck out 77 times last year....not terrible
for a power hitter - and that was just a bit over his
career average - probably due more with injuries and overcompensating.

October 29, 2008  02:25 PM ET

Angels need to keep it together one more year to make another run.....

October 29, 2008  02:52 PM ET

this organization to me seems to continue to make the right calls with few if any wrong calls. lackey is work horse that eats up innings and throws a lot of strikes and vlad while on the downside of his career is still a consistent run producer. locking up tex would be a nice bat in the middle of that lineup for years to come but even he doesn't sign with them they will find someone else to fill the void.

October 29, 2008  03:17 PM ET

That picture in the article; is that supposed to be Vlad Guerrero or Bunny Wailer?

that's the thing. on the one hand, manny is a game changer. for god's sake i think i could hit .250 if i was batting in front of manny. on the other hand, manny is capable of choosing not to put his best foot forward. he's worth every penny he can get when he is locked in. but if you sign him you run the risk of him phoning it in. i think the boston experience sums it up perfectly. couldn't live with him. really missed his bat in the order when he was gone

He is not patient at the plate, he goes after and hits balls out of the zone, i think if he were more patient he would be a better hitter.
