Fulmer hears calls for his job

Tennessee Coach Phillip Fulmer can read the Southeastern Conferences standings as well as anyone. And though he claims not to pay much attention, he's well aware that the calls for his ouster grow louder with each painful loss. During a news conference Tuesday, Fulmer addressed recent speculation about his precarious job security and acknowledged that the Vols' disappointing season is making his future with the program less certain. "We're in the age of instant gratification and what have you done lately. I understand that," Fulmer said. "Hopefully we can give everyone good encouragement about winning and what we're going to do in the future, with how we play." UT is 3-5 overall and 1-4 in the Southeastern Conference. The Vols have lost to their three main rivals this season -- Florida, Georgia and Alabama -- and another high-profile showdown comes this weekend when UT travels to South Carolina to face longtime nemesis Steve Spurrier. Fulmer though, insisted, he still has a lot of bite in him.

Voices, I hear voices in my head.

October 29, 2008  06:35 AM ET

The voices in my head are telling me "If you leave Tennessee, they will win".

October 29, 2008  07:24 AM ET

Does this qualify as the "Well, duh...." story of the day?

October 29, 2008  08:42 AM ET

I'm so torn about this. I want them to win as much as anybody, but Fulmer has been so good to the school and he really works hard. I don't know what I want to happen.

October 29, 2008  09:10 AM ET

to be honest fulmer hasn't really been good to the school since 02. for the past 6 years UT has been on a steady decline, and it took complete luck for UT to even be in a position to make it to the sec title game, ie they played UGA before they found knowshawn. the title in 98 was luck too as FSU's chris winke didn't even play in the game. his "give him one more year" came and went in 06 after that 5-6 debacle. UT needs to avoide what clemson went through with tommy bowden, he is on the hot seat, given a win out or else ultimatum, and the teams manages to win 4 games. when you do that it takes forever to get rid of a medicore coach. UT should just acknowledge what Fulmer has become without cutcliff, a mediocre coach. and mediocre does not cut it in the SEC.

I would Love for Fulmer to come to I.U. He is a very good coach and will be on top again soon
Tenn. fans You are lucky to have such a good guy.

and fulmer should not blame the calls for him to be fired on our "age of instant graftication". that would be the case if he went on a slump for one season then everyone calls for his job. this is diffrent. he is 3 years removed from a 5-6 season and in the middle of what appears to be a similar type season. we haven't beat florida since 2004 and he has a loseing record against every coach in the sec east except for rick brooks of UK. the calls for his head are based on his mediocrity, nothing else

exactly, I was going to say the same thing about "age of instant gratification." He's had it coming for a while and the Vol fans have been very patient. Waiting 10 years for another SEC title does not qualify as "instant gratification." This wasn't supposed to be a great year for the Vols either, so next season should probably be the test for Fulmer.

We'll see if he can turn the season into a winning one w/ S. Car., Wyoming, Vanderbilt, and Kentucky left on the ticket. I bet the Vols will eek out a winning season or at least a .500 season.

Hes a very mediocre coach who has been a great recruiter. Whenever his opponents have the same type of talent, he is always outcoached. He has lived on superior talent giving him 9 wins a year but even the top recruits have dried up. He has always been able to get the great talent who want NO rules to worry about because Fulmer is as weak in terms of discipline as you can get.

Wow! An SEC coach losing his job before the end of the season? I though the SEC was so big and bad? Just ask Vanderbilt how good Duke is.

Majors left after 1992. How did Fulmer win the National Championship 6 years later with Majors' players?

Phil Fulmer is a class act. His loyalty and service to the University are unmatched. His record as a coach is better than most, present or past. He has received the endorsement of the players he's coached, more than 100 of which took out a full-page newspaper ad to thank him for mentoring them and contributing to the quality of their character and lives. He deserves the continuing support of the University, the alumni, and the fans.

The University doesn't pay him millions of dollars for loyalty, they pay him for a product that has been sub-par for several years. I've never heard of anyone else wanting him, so that loyalty may be out of necessity. He's gotten more than he deserves: a fat wallet and a chance to coach for almost two decades at a school that deserves more than what they've been getting this decade. As for the players who took out the newspaper ad, the vast majority were players from the 1990's who haven't played here for several years and still think he is the same coach (apparently they're not watching the games either).

I used to really like the guy, but his sheer arrogance is really getting on my nerves. Wanting an SEC championship in a 10 year span is not wanting "instant gratification". Apparently the "lately" from "What have you done for me lately?" lasts about 10 years. As for his earlier comments about most of his critics "having never played football", nobody has to have played to look at scores and records. This is not Bobby Bowden here. Tennessee had a proud tradition before he ever showed up. Johnny Majors won 2 SEC championships in the last four years he was at UT before Fulmer took over.

lets not forget how good this university has been to phil. he has been given EVERY opportunity to succeed. he gets all the money he wants, millions put into new facilities, and unparalled support from the university and athletic department for a coach that has meerly carried the batton. he is treated as a god among men, even though his performance has been anything but god-like. he may be the nicest man in the world, but that is not reason enough to keep your job as coach. if a nice, loyal guy is all UT wants then i am sure they could ask the dalai lama if he wants the job. that aside lets not not forget how he STOLE the his current job from the greatest UT player up until that time, johnny majors.
