Peavy's agent waiting on Sabathia deal

C.C. Sabathia's pending massive payday on the free-agent market could embolden Jake Peavy to seek extra money if the Padres try to trade Peavy to a team he doesn't prefer. That's how Peavy's agent Barry Axelrod drew it up. "It's not that far of a stretch to say this is a free-agent situation," Axelrod said, "and if there is a guy like Sabathia out there, we would have to look at what any given team is going to pay Sabathia, because he and Jake won the Cy Young award in the same year, and we're going to put Jake on the same plane as this guy." He added that "there might be some places where it is a more palatable deal to Jake than any other places." Axelrod already has said that whatever club would trade for Peavy, 27, likely would have to extend his full no-trade powers through contract's end. Peavy and the Padres agreed in December to a three-year, $52 million extension that includes a $4 million buyout on a $22 million option for 2013, and full no-trade powers through 2010. Sometime this offseason, Sabathia reportedly could sign for $25 million a year, and if a prospective trade partner doesn't thrill Peavy at that point, Axelrod would consider it fair game to bring Sabathia's salary into negotiations with a potential employer.

He needs to do this. I mean how can he afford to feed his family on $17 mil a year. I'm so disgusted with this "Well he's making this much so now I have to make at least this much even though I signed a contract less than a year ago." If you want to renegotiate every year sign 1 year contracts!

That is a good point, Crafty, and I mostly agree with you. Ramirez was a good case and point -- he didn't like the contract that he'd signed that gave the Red Sox two one-year team options, so he forced himself out. However, being that Peavy did negotiate a no-trade clause and the Padres are now trying to trade him, I think that makes this a different situation.

Surprised Peavy does not have Boras as his agent, yet. Let's see the country is in an economic meltdown and peavy and his agent want a bigger contract than the one they negotiated and signed just a year ago? That surely will make the fans really happy to see him play, especially if he pitches like he did this year.

It seems we will never get an answer to that question. ;)

I always hear these kind of stories and the scene from Mr. Deeds comes to mind. The one where the QB for the Jets wants to renegotiate his contract because he won the MVP award. Deeds then says to the guy well if you had a bad year could we go and renegotiate your contract for less. We are in a recession and Selig has even told clubs to be careful with raising ticket prices and yet agents and players still think they are going to break records and the bank when they sign contracts this winter. Just goes to show how out of touch some people are with reality.

That's my baseball rant for today. Good morning atro, cat, jr, slink and any lurkers.

Good morning bcoltrinari. When your "job" is playing a game and being paid millions for it, I would think that would be kind of a surreal feeling and very easy to lose touch with the reality that is life for most of us "poor people."

I agree. I'd love to work only half the year, for 4-5 hours a day tops and get paid $$$$ to play a game that me and my friends do for free on weekends. Hell if they paid me $70K to play I'd sign up for it. But the union has become all powerful and any player who cracks the 25 man roster gets $390K minimum. Unions were created to protect workers from being exploited not to exploit ownership the way they do today.

Well Braves are out of the Peavy chase in that case. What team wants to give up a boatload of prospects and *then* have to renegotiate Peavy for a huge payday. I think I just answered my own question...

Yeah that is a farce. It's the worst case scenario for any team because first you have to trade away prospects and players and then on top of that you basically have to pretend the guy is a free agent and sign him to a long term big money deal. The only thing that could equal that would be to pay a large posting fee for a Japanese player and then have to pay them big money to actually sign with you. I can see trading for a guy or trying to sign a guy who is a free agent but def not both for the same player.

And the answer to your queston would be the Mets lol. Although Santana did come through for them big time. Still the price was just too high I think and that is why the Yanks and Sox shied away I think. Why have to lose prospects when you can wait a year and just sign a star pitcher for money and a few compensory draft picks.
