Is Leinart's future in Arizona?

After losing the Cardinals starting quarterback job to Kurt Warner in late August, Matt Leinart dropped out of society, grew a long beard and is now working the graveyard shift at a convenience store. At least it seems that way. Warner, 37 and in the last year of his contract, would like to play a couple of more years. And with a performance this season that could merit him MVP consideration, he certainly looks like he could. So far, the Cardinals haven't opened negotiations with Warner's agent, Mark Bartelstein, although Bartelstein plans to call General Manager Rod Graves this week. If the two sides come to an agreement, where does that leave Leinart, the 10th overall pick in the 2006 draft? It's a question Leinart admitted has crossed his mind. But, Leinart said, it's not something that worries him. If Warner signs for two years, Leinart, 25, faces the prospect of being the backup through the 2010 season, unless the Cardinals try to trade him. Trading a talented young quarterback would be a difficult decision to make, given Warner's age.

My guess is the Lions will trade there 3 draft pick they received from the Cowboys and trade for Matt Leinart.

Leinart, after a few promising moments as arookie really looks like a bust now. First round busts are hard to overcome especially when they are qbs...If I were the cardinals, I would take anything I could get for him...even Warner is better at this late stage of his career

just a fianl point on my first one...most nfl gm, finally look for production from a young qb after about 3 years of learning the ropes, and Leinart cant even retain the starting job over a 37 year old journeyman qb

Warner isn't a journeyman.......he's a two time league MVP, and a SuperBowl MVP. He also has the 3rd highest passer rating in league history.

Another case of a jock who's time has passed - don't know if he is trying to regain past glories or just trying for a fat paycheck

Only if that future includes a Frat house with a steady stream of honeys coming in through the front door...ah, to be back there myself again....

great college players don't always make good NFL players, and usually players that win the "big" awards aren't even in the league 5 years later

I don't know why people are so down on Warner. He has proven that he can still play. The guy didn't take his first NFL snap until age 27-28 and he'll finish the year with nearly 30k yards and 175 TDs. If he had 3-4 more years he'd be in the top ten in both cateogires for a career.

The guys a winner and his story is great. Everyone wishes they could be pulled from a mundane job like stocking grocery shelves to winning a super bowl and MVP.

Was Matt leinart ever that good to begin with? He played on a talented college team with pure athletes at every position at USC...the number of athletes on that team made USC good, not Matt Leinart.

Matt Leinart is still in the league?

so who is the best player from that USC team? Bush has been disappointing with all the attention and the contract he signed. He has some decent stats but clearly we all have expected more from him. Leinart has been a bust. Lendale white is decent. what about the other players.

Vince Young has also been a disappointment....

Apparently the coaches who see him practice everyday think he is not capable of beating out an almost 40 year old QB. He could bounce back assuming he is in the right situation.

I think one of Leinart's problems is that the Cards players don't believe in him the same way they do Warner. I think that carried a lot of weight for the decision to go with Warner...when the coaching staff and management obviously wanted Leinart to win the job.

Matt Loser is a prima donnald who DOES NOT know how to work and does not try.

Ugh. I'm sick of his bible-thumping story. If he wasn't so "holier than thou", I might give him some props, but he and that creepy wife just irks me to death. He's going call it quits at the end of the season anyhow, and Leinart can have his job back. Draft well, Arizona, that's all I have to tell you.

October 29, 2008  01:48 PM ET

rediculous comments!... leinart was beat out by an "old man" who is at the top of the league in every passing category. so what...this is temporary! you people don't know what your talking about, leinart is the future qb of the cards plain and simple. done and done

October 29, 2008  02:04 PM ET

Send Leinart to Tampa, we could always use another ...

October 29, 2008  02:13 PM ET

Question is, is his future in the NFL..If he can't move a club as loaded in offensive talent as that, he's got problems..Leinart's looking like a bust unless something drastic changes. The Vikings are notorious for sending bunches of draft picks for a player, maybe Minnesota will sent 4 or 5 picks to Arizona for him to sit the bench.

Wow, is it me or does he really look like a deer staring into the headlights?
