Mussina to decide future soon

Arn Tellem will travel to Montoursville, Pa., shortly to find out what Mike Mussina's future holds. "I am going to see him at the end of the week," Mussina's agent said yesterday. "Nothing has been decided." While Mussina strongly hinted to Yankee staff members and friends he was going to retire, he hasn't officially done that. And while that is the way to bet, several Yankee officials believe the 40-year-old righty will file for free agency following the World Series to keep his options open. Mussina, who won 20 games for the first time in his career this past season when he made $11 million, would have to be wanted by a team within a short flight from Montoursville. And that might not be enough, since Mussina said on the final weekend of the season that if he comes back for one season it would really be a three-year commitment in order to reach 300 victories. He has 270 wins.

Forget Mussina's future, what's Kenny Loggins up to?

October 29, 2008  05:55 AM ET

Excuse me while I don't care

He'll be back. He's going to retire after a 20 win season?! Nope. He'll go for 300 wins.
Good luck, Mike, and enjoy some more big bucks.

We'd love to have you back, Mike, but three years? You'll get your three hundred wins in two, don't be a schmuck like so many others and over-estimate your value going forward.

He'll get in the HOF even if he does not come back. He would be a great role model in the clubhouse, though.

October 29, 2008  09:41 AM ET

wonder if he will go to the Red Sox? hmm..........

October 29, 2008  09:47 AM ET

Now THAT would be a busy thread.

October 29, 2008  09:47 AM ET

come on back mike we can't wait to see you back in pinstripes, hopefully not for 3 years but if it is, he could maybe come out of the Bullpen for the 3rd season...

I dunno. The voters love to see 300 wins and when a pitcher doesn't reach that milestone they can sit for years in HOF limbo. Moose would need a 3 year deal because while it is realistic to say that maybe he could win the 30 games needed in 2 seasons you have to account for injuries that might creep up (he is 40 years old). So for him if he comes back he is going to have to get 3 years. The money probably won't be anything outstanding but it is the years he will be looking for.

October 29, 2008  09:49 AM ET

no one over 40 should be allowed to sign a deal for more than one year. I'd like to see Moose come back. Hopefully last year wasn't a fluke - he seemed to make the adjustments and found success. For once I'd like to see an older player just stick with a team out of loyalty and not try to suck them for everything they have. Mike's made a ton of money from the yanks and they stuck with him. He wasn't very good in 07 and he started off very poorly in 08. If not for the injuries I think he would've been pulled from the rotation. His first 708 starts were abysmal.

October 29, 2008  09:50 AM ET

sorry...that was 7-8 starts not 708.

I think he knows he isn't going to be getting paid $15M a year from this point on but if the Yanks offered him a deal for 2 years at $10M a year with a duel option for a 3rd year both sides would be satisfied. The option year would only be used if Moose still needed a few more wins to reach 300 or if the Yanks need to fill a rotation spot in 2011 and Moose still wanted to come back.

October 29, 2008  09:56 AM ET

not for 3 years...sorry moose, but 3 years...that cant happen in a Yankee uniform....that is too long.

I'd personally like to see YOU in pinstripes. Pinstripes, polka-dots, anything!

But would a 2 year deal with an option be a good idea?

I think the fans would be happy with that as well. $5MM is chump change in the MLB.

That would be perfect. I wonder, though, if he's thinking about returning to the O's for his swan song.

Yeah but he is going to want to pitch behind an offense that can hit because that would translate to more wins. Orioles are not a winning team. If he stays in the AL East the Yanks are the way to go but if not he should move to an NL team where his era would be lower and the hitters won't know him which would give him an advantage for the first year.
