Willingham appealed to parents more than players

In the end, it was about the players. It usually is. Or in Washington's case, the lack of them recruited on Tyrone Willingham's watch. Here's the question that will forever be debated about Willingham, out as UW coach after the season: Why did it work for him at Stanford when it didn't at Notre Dame or Washington? How did he get to a Rose Bowl with the Cardinal in 1999 and recruit NFL-bound players like Troy Walters, Willie Howard, Tank Williams and Kwame Harris? With less-stringent admission standards at Notre Dame and Washington, where was the commensurate talent haul at those two schools? Part of it, no doubt, was the nature of the Pac-10 then. Stanford caught the Pac-10 at a time before USC had Pete Carroll, and the league was relatively down. My theory on why Willingham later struggled as a recruiter: He appealed to parents more than he did their kids. When a coach sits down in a prospect's living room, he's usually dialing into two channels. Parents want to know about the business school, the academic-support system and things like whether athletes will live in the dorms for two years. Kids want to know how soon they might start. Ever button-down, meticulous and proper, Willingham struck parents as a good choice. But my guess with recruits is, most of them have to see the boyish, good-times side of a coach. Somehow, they need to envision him as a guy who, 25 years ago, could have pulled off a senior prank in high school as they might.

T.W., I feel your pain. Back when I was in High School, the parents of the girls that I dated like me more than their daughters! It was depressing. Luckily, I finally found a really ugly girl with no other prospects to marry me. We now have two really ugly kids. (Stupid, too.)

I believe Ty was not playing golf before 1999.

I think Ty thought the talent would just fall into his lap at ND & UW. Or maybe he thought if he got the parents to buy into his way the kids would too!

Bottom line is Ty couldn't get it done on Sat!!

It took Notre Dame 4 years to get the roster numbers back, I think it might take a little longer for Washington. Best of luck to UW.

He brought in a lot of NFL players at ND...

Good points Sexton. I advocate for Ty but he didn't get the job done at Washington. I think there is still a place in college football for Ty but he's going to have to go to a school in a non-bcs conference that is willing to be patient, and accept the fact that Ty won't lead them to 9 or 10 win seasons.

He would be a good at a school who sees a successful season as an 8 win season.

LOL.

Ugly and stupid. Man, I feel your pain.

Appealing to parents is okay, as long as they still have some college eligibility left!

He just can't be credited with developing them. Brady Quinn said he learned more from Charlie than he ever did from Ty. And alot of the other players were on the bench when Charlie arrived, like Tom Zibakowski and Jeff Samardja.

where will he fall to next?

This guy is a first class human being. I just wish he could change part of his approach, I would really like to see him successful.

The PGA tour...?

October 29, 2008  11:09 PM ET

he might do well as an assistant somewhere. nothing wrong with that.

October 29, 2008  11:17 PM ET

Irish,

He is a first class human being. Is anybody saying he is a bad person? No! He is just a Horiffic coach! Bad doesnt seem to cover it. He has had 5 winning seasons in 14 years as a head coach.... FIVE! Is there any doubt?

His last winning season was 7 years ago.... 7 years without a winning season? Would any other coach at a Major BCS Football Program allow that?

He can be the nicest person in the world..... I Just don't think he has any business as a "Elite" coach. High school? Div 2 maybe.....

Think of the kids in the program that threw their careers away because TY can't win... The Program donors whom lost big $$$$.....

The fans (LIKE ME) who have had to endure and suffer because he is a Nice guy....

October 29, 2008  11:19 PM ET

PS.... He is 1-5 in Bowls, his only win comming 11 years ago.

But hey, he is a nice guy.....

Kinda like the last handful of Notre Dame coaches, who as a group are 0 and what? 10 with the last win coming almost fourteen years ago?

I don't know, but I'll bet that TW got within 7 points of a win in those four losses. (Notre Lame hasn't done that since 1996!

t.w. was and still is a good coach from stanford to n.d. where he got fired without even completing his contract he went to washington that hasn't had a great season since tuiososopo (how ever you spell his name lol) was there now its not his fualt its not a great recruiting hot bed and u bet if your school isnt a school known for football talent the only peeps that will be interrested in you are parents he needs to go to a different team out of the pac 10 to a big 12 of sec school (not texas we have mack lol ) and then we can see how good of a coach he really is before we judge

October 30, 2008  04:54 AM ET

He isn't that good of a coach. He has had his 15 min of fame. He hit it just right (timing) at Stanford and probably shouldn't have gone to ND, they expect perfect! Where are his players now that went to the pros? Washington was hurting before he came and unfortunately the (timing) this time was not right. He should go to a smaller school and teach football and be happy by not having all the stress. Good luck.

October 30, 2008  09:08 AM ET

I don't know, what I'm talking about! What do you expect, I live in Eugene OR!!! And our team can't win unless the QB's last name is Dixon!

"t.w. was and still is a good coach from stanford to n.d. where he got fired without even completing his contract"

You've got TY goggles on!

In todays world of College Football, a player can transfer and coaches can leave for another school for more money! But everyone is up in arms when ND dismissed Willingham early.

"now its not his fualt its not a great recruiting hot bed"
Ty didn't have to recruit only from the NW part of the US.

"and u bet if your school isnt a school known for football talent the only peeps that will be interrested in you are parents" ???

"he needs to go to a different team out of the pac 10 to a big 12 of sec school (not texas we have mack lol ) and then we can see how good of a coach he really is before we judge."

See you wouldn't even want him at the school you cheer for.

Here's an idea, let it go! Ty's done at Notre Dame, and he's done at UW!

I actually like Ty, but this reporter would make it seem he would have had success if the kids could only envision him running around giving wet willies and wedgies.

Call it a hunch... I think the problem is a bit more involved...
