Saban prefers 'plus-one' BCS

Nick Saban isn't changing his tune by advocating a change in the way college football's national champion is decided. No. 2 Alabama is among a handful of unbeaten teams still standing in the BCS conferences, and the possibility of an undefeated team being left out of the BCS title game could create another controversy for the current system. Saban, however, said he has long favored a plus-one method -- proposed by Southeastern Conference Commissioner Mike Slive in May -- where the top four teams meet in two bowl games and the winners play a week later for the title. "I've always been an advocate of the plus-one system since 1997 when Michigan and Nebraska got in a situation where they couldn't decide the national championship," Saban said. "I just feel that only having two teams sort of takes a lot of teams out of it." But, he added, "there wasn't a lot of support" for the SEC's proposal rejected by Football Bowl Subdivision conference commissioners in May. That means the BCS format won't get a makeover until at least the 2014 season.

I myself like the plus 1-2-3 system and then everyone is happy.

When have we haven't heard this before, it's not new. One of these days we'll hopefully see something come of a playoff system that works for the college teams. Until then keep dreaming.

Seriously, if they had a playoff with the conference winners it would pull in more $$ than the NCAA Basketball playoffs does - billions $$ in TV rights.

You are exactly right, it would be HUGE! One of the biggest opponents of any type of playoff is the Big 10 Commissioner, Jim Delaney. Take it up with him!

Eventually, there will be a playoff system with 8 teams.

The current system is not any different than the prior AP/UPI poll. Polls can NEVER been unified so the only solution is playoff system.... like every other sport (college or pro) employs.

October 30, 2008  10:32 AM ET

Screw '+1'. They need an 8 team playoff. The 6 BCS conference winners plus 2 at large bids. Play through December like the NFL and have a championship week between Christmas and New Years (Final 4?). At most, the two best teams in the country play 3 extra games.

October 30, 2008  11:10 AM ET

Yeah, Saban be preferrin' it now only because he know he ain't getiin' into da NC game. Penn State and probably Texas gonna be in da game as undefeateds. Alabama gonna get there clock rung by LSU. No way LSU loses at home to Bama. LSU wins, Bama not even going to the SEC Championship game. Don't matter none though because Penn State is gonna be the next NCAAF National Champion, son.

October 30, 2008  11:23 AM ET

No, this system works perfectly. Who doesn't want to see Utah and Penn State in the BCS Title game this year? Seriously...

October 30, 2008  11:54 AM ET

4-team playoff then you cant complain

October 30, 2008  11:55 AM ET

I bet Saban still feels the sting of being co-champion after his team won the BCS championship game in 2004 (the 2004 Sugar Bowl).
I bet he also recognizes that Alabama's chances of getting through unscaved are much less than Penn St's chances.

October 30, 2008  11:57 AM ET

I would love to see SEC-Big 12-Pac 10-Big 10 champions in a four team playoff after this season, but I think 8 team is the optimal playoff system.

October 30, 2008  11:57 AM ET

In other news, Bears do indeed $hit in the woods!!!

October 30, 2008  01:17 PM ET

Saban also prefers to have his players pledge their souls and first borns too. Something about NCAA sanctions?

October 30, 2008  01:27 PM ET

A plus-one would be so much better, and the ratings would be ridiculous, but you'd still leave too many teams out. In 2004, 5 teams were undefeated going into their bowls, and one (Boise State) was ranked 10th. A 16 team playoff would be ideal, just like the FCS uses, because it's pretty much guaranteed that no undefeated team will be left out. And most importantly, we would have a true champion.

October 30, 2008  01:46 PM ET

12 team playoff. The 11 conferance champions and one at large team. The top 4 ranked conferance champions get a bye week. The others play at the favourite teams stadium. Re-seed after the first round, and have the remaining 8 teams play a knock out playoff (favourite team plays at home, how nice would it be to see Boise St. Play at Florida or Texas). Have the final game play at the national championship bowl site. This would allow the bowls to keep their teams, and a playoff system.

Ok so alabama loses to LSU. We STILL go to the SEC championship game b/c LSU ALREADY HAS 2 CONFERENCE LOSES! All we have to do is beat Auburn and we're in. And when we beat Florida in the SEC, you can't tell me a 1-loss SEC team won't even be considered for the title game. LSU got in last year with 2 loses. And who's to say penn state won't lose b4 the title game. Maybe b/c yall have the #73 S.O.S? Let's take it one week at a time.

Not if there are still two unbeatens from major BCS conferences still out there (Texas and Penn St). IF.

And you can't compare last year's 2-loss LSU to this year in any way, shape or form. There were no major unbeaten teams, everyone had at least one loss. This yr, you still have 3 majors and some mid-majors still unbeaten.

Not to mention that I would lay money on 'bama beating LSU, even at home. LSU suddenly appears to be unable to stop a grandma right now.

But I completely agree with the rest of what you said in response to PSU homer.

yeah good point.
and like you said. IF
Texas still has some tough games and Penn State can always have an bad week.
I've also heard people say PSU gets in ahead of Bama if all three of stay undefeated which is total BS. They're in the Big 11! haha
