08:16 AM ET 10.30 | Seattle Sounders FC is in the midst of its coaching search and the rumor mill has already churned out a few names. At this point, only two candidates have been confirmed: current Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer and New England assistant Paul Mariner. here are four names that should feature prominently on that list: Sigi Schmid, Colin Clarke, Mike Sorber and Curt Onalfo.

Timing, Money, and I'm beginning to see the "puke'n sound" fill with "****" in anticipation!

schmid will stay with CLB...
Onalfo will stay with KC...

Clarke could make the jump from USL
isnt Sorber asst'ing at STLU??

if they can fork over M's for their DP, perhaps they can fork over for an Asst coach of an already estsablished MLS side.... that way they already know the system, the teams and the rules...

One would have to think that Clarke is the favorite...ex FCD manager...knows the MLS and did extremely well with Puerto Rico.

But good luck convincing him to give up the weather. Seattle v. Puerto Rico for climate - no contest.

Sorber is currently assisting your man, Bob Bradley with the MNT.

I'm pulling for Paul Mariner. He deserves it after doing yoeman's work playing second fiddle to Stevie Nichols. Also, he's quite used to the pissin' rain as he's a Geordie.

Clarke could be the one given his success in Puerto Rico, but he was pretty bad with Dallas. I'm hoping Mariner gets a chance.

How was Clarke bad? In his last season with FCD they won the Western Conference. It was the fact that in his last two seasons as manager - they got eliminated in the playoffs earlier than expected considering how they finished the regular season.

It was one of those "moving in a different direction" decisions because of not being able to advance in the playoffs. Doesn't help that Houston / NE Revs had been in prime form at that time too.

October 30, 2008  11:35 AM ET

I'm not saying Clarke should be the Sounders manager...just saying that he was a quality skipper for FCD - just couldn't get it done in the playoffs. If Steve Nicols doesn't get the Revs to the finals every year - he would be somewhere else too.

New blood isn't bad either - instead of the manager revolving door; so maybe Paul Mariner is the way to go.

Jose Mourinho, maybe?

QUOTE(#5):

Clarke might be the favorite but man I would never leave Puerto Rico. That place is gorgeous, and the women are too.

Can I get witnesssss?!?! Yes it is but unfortunately it is also riddled with crime and poverty.

I agree with zizou about bringing in new blood, why not give Clarke a shot again, I don't think FCD was totally all his fault either, the players were very inconsistent.

I want 'em to bring back 'Arry Redknapp. I think his first (assistant) coaching was the NASL Sounders in 1979. Check out his picture in this banner: http://goalseattle.com/museum/1979OriginalSounders.htm

There were loads of internal issues when Clarke was FCD's manager.

October 30, 2008  02:59 PM ET

I know he's gotta be first in line for the Colorado job but I'm surprised Dynamo assistant John Spencer isn't on the list.

October 30, 2008  03:08 PM ET

you just gotta have a "Mariner" in the port city of Seattle . . .

October 30, 2008  03:15 PM ET

How about Eric Wynalda? ;)

October 30, 2008  04:04 PM ET

Brian Schmetzer deserves a shot.

October 31, 2008  08:43 AM ET

Bruce Rioch is now available. Why not him? Maybe Schmetzer as an Assistant?

Brian Schmetzer deserves a shot. He is well respected throughout the Seattle Area - and in and around Northwestern North America.
It would be a bad scene if he was not chosen to at least take the helm for the inaugural year.
