The dismal economic picture has already started to take its toll in the world of NASCAR. Several sources have reported as many as 750 to 1,000 employees from various Sprint Cup, Nationwide and truck series teams will be released the Monday after the Homestead weekend season finales. DEI, faced with the prospect of shrinking from four to one full-time team in 2009, is poised to lay off as many 100 people if necessary. And according to Felix Sabates, part owner of Chip Ganassi's NASCAR operation, seven or eight teams from this year's Cup roster won't be in business in 2009.

October 30, 2008  08:59 AM ET

I don't like DEI one damn bit,but this is some
sad shi/ to read about, these people have familys
to support,(Thank You Mr Bush.)

October 30, 2008  09:15 AM ET

I agree Sly-Thank you Mr. Bush!!! We only can pray that the economy gets better in the first year after the election... NASCAR is just seeing that they are like us common folks..Welcome to the real world-so many losing their jobs and their homes!!!

October 30, 2008  09:18 AM ET

Welcome to our world boys. We that work for the big three have families too, but there is no pity there. Keep buying foriegn. Thank You fellow AMERICAN CITIZENS.

October 30, 2008  09:20 AM ET

joe-You have pity from me. My husband works at a GM Dealership who after 35 years in business sold to the local Ford Dealership.. We have been struggling for about 2 years now to be able to keep up on our payments...I just pray that whoever wins the election they help the middle class!!!!

October 30, 2008  09:27 AM ET

Hey Ohio thanks. This was aimed at Sly as he always bashes us.

October 30, 2008  09:43 AM ET

Yea JRM is laying off some people and havent secured a sponsor for the 88 yet. The 5 has Hellmann's?? Mayo for 10 races but they are moving that sponsor over to the 88. When someone like June can't secure sponsors for '09 just imagine how everyone else in doing. '09 is scary for NASCAR

October 30, 2008  09:49 AM ET

Hey joe, don't pick on Sly---He is my buddy, he has stuck up for me lots of times when I put my foot in my mouth-and sometimes I do that quit often.....LOL

OK I will take the bait.

Joe as I have mentioned before time and time again, the reason the "BIG"3 are in the boat that they are in is their own fault. The failed to change, grow and make that turn that these foriegn companies did a long time ago. Joe I own a '07 Ford Focus and a 97 Mazda 626. The mazda is a 2.0 liter and it gets better gas mileage than the Focus. Also the Focus's air is already messing up, oh I forgot to mention my 626 and 218K miles on it and the Focus 11K. Build dependable, fuel efficient cars NOW that will get the American buyers back... I won't buy crap, and in return recieve the lowest customer satisfaction in the industy.

Speed I will put money on it that you shop at wal mart. I have a 1998 Ranger with 280k, I have a f 150 with 150k and still running strong. I have an Explorer with 130k. Mazda is owned by ford. I believe we are bringing several new cars to the market in 2010 but by then everyone will want SUV's again. The foriegn carmakers always had small cars so they didn't actually react faster. They just started to get into the pickup and large vehicle market when the gas went up. Now I know it's the unions fault all this is happening. Check out where the A/C unit was made.

FORD???S DOMESTIC BRAND QUALITY IN STATISTICAL DEAD HEAT WITH TOYOTA AND HONDA FOR 2008 MODEL YEAR
Ford Motor Company???s surging domestic quality is now equal to the best in the industry for the 2008 model year, according to the latest U.S. Global Quality Research System (GQRS) study. (13 Oct 08, USA)

Ford had the most vehicles in history selected as a ???top safety pick??? in 2007 by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

We are trying

October 30, 2008  11:36 AM ET

Yes I know the two are married. Granted safety is an issue but fuel economy and reliability are key. I have nothing against the unions "Now I know it's the unions fault all this is happening." Its the CEO's the big people at these companies that should be removed. ???"Check out where the A/C unit was made." Is it not America?

October 30, 2008  11:44 AM ET

With the open trade agreements I really doubt it. We would like the items put in our cars to be made by our workers in the parts plants in the US but that is also going the way of every other item we buy is. How about the Wal Mart thing? Do you shop there? 90 % chinese junk

October 30, 2008  11:49 AM ET

Too bad you can't even get away from the news about the rough economy even on FN now....sad...we're all better than this people, let's talk NASCAR in here damn it!!!!

Ain't gonna happen -- the Donkey Herders are still in charge of the big house ... don't blame Bushwacker. Whoever "buys" the big seat will have the same problem -- sh** politics as usual ... this isn't an American problem but rather a world problem and it all is attributed to our "friends" with all the beach!

I agree with you there Joe, I try my hardest NOT to step foot in WM after seeing a documentary on WM and their practices. We here in memphis JUST denied another WM from being built not 2 miles from another WM. I try to buy produce from Farmer Markets or local markets and try to shop as much as possible at Kroger. BUT there are something you just HAVE to buy there, because of the prices.

October 30, 2008  01:13 PM ET

thats why walmart is strong.....because of the prices

October 30, 2008  01:19 PM ET

They are strong because they don't offer decent insurance to hard working middle class workers, hire asians to make this crap (instead of US workers) Have you seen their working conditions. I'd advise you to get educated.

October 30, 2008  01:56 PM ET

We always come back to this topic...especially JoeFord. Buy AMERICAN! Well, if Bush made it so that American factories had incentive to build QUALITY products here, it'd be easier. It's so easy to outsource and cheaper too and they do just that. Want a good digital camera? What AMERICAN made brand are you going to buy? You can't...there are none. Polaroid sold out in '04 and they were the last. Clothing? Most is brought in from China,India, etc. My family was in the garment industry for 50yrs..the clothing district downtown. Now? Flea markets, jewelry stores, etc take their place with merchandise brought in from overseas. You can preach all you want to buy American, but until some MAJOR changes occur, it's almost impossible. And as for autos, we've gone over that. Most of us are American Iron owners which is probably why we're NASCAR fans. I'll take a domestic car anyday, but if our companies don't continue to shape up and offer quality, they'll be gone/bought out in the next 5yrs. One year is nothing to brag about (Joe's comment re: Ford quality in 2008). They all need to make that "JOB1" again....not JobNone. I was in the auto Industry off and on again for about 10yrs. One of the biggest drawbacks (to Fords especially) were that the residual values on most cars were AWFUL. After 3-5yrs, they were worth next to nothing..so even leases were expensive. An Import lease unfortunately had a much better residual value in the same time and had better lease rates. It was just the way it was. And NO, I HATE WalMart..and avoid that place like the plague. Hopefully '09 brings major 'Change' like advertised/promised. As for the rumor at hand, we all predicted this before..so this is no surprise and it flat sucks for these folks to be out of work at the end of the season...wish them all the best that they hook up somewhere.
