Brewers to make Sabathia an offer

Milwaukee Brewers general manager Doug Melvin is preparing to make his run at left-hander CC Sabathia. After introducing new manager Ken Macha on Thursday, Melvin said he was close to making an offer to Sabathia, the midseason acquisition who pitched the Brewers to their first playoff berth since 1982. "It will be soon," Melvin said. "We're getting close to doing that." The general consensus in the baseball industry is that the Brewers have little chance of keeping Sabathia, because the top pitcher on the free agent market will command a high price. The New York Yankees and the two teams in Los Angeles are considered the top candidates to make Sabathia filthy rich.

Somehow I don't think the Brew is going to outbid the Yanks for CC.

October 31, 2008  08:15 AM ET

CC claims he had a blast with the Brewcrew, but Dan's right, he will be NOT in millwalkeee

The guy who refused to negotiate a new contract with a trade is going to leave money on the table? Riigghht.

I'd like to know Grossedout's opinion on this matter.

Everyone here is right.......the Yanks won't let Milwaukee outbid them

And they shouldn't. Even with all the millions the Yankees give to teams like Milwaukee. Sorry, folks.

October 31, 2008  10:08 AM ET

They shouldn't even bother. They don't have the cash to pull it off. This is a PR move to show their fan base that they tried and nothing more.

Brewers won't outbid anyone. They will offer a deal that will fall short of what CC is looking for. They can then spin it as he left them and they gave it their best effort. Yankees will be highest bidders but the Angels and Dodgers will also probably have large bids in as well and might be helped by the fact that CC allegedly prefers the West coast.

Morning BC. It will be interesting to see which love of his rises to the surface, love of money or love of California. I, myself, prefer a wallet full of cash to an earthquake, race riot, mud slide, ginat sink hole, forest fire, or any unpredictable combination thereof.

he'll stick with the nl 'cause he likes to hit home run

Yeah he can use all that money to buy a house in Cali for the off season and another in NY for when he is in season.

Offer Captain Cheesecake all the dessert he can ever eat and that may at least make him think about their offer. Its a fact that no ones gonna be able to outbid the Yankees so get creative.

Good points. Maybe offer him his own locker room with buffet table, free liposuction for when he gets too big in 2 years, if it is anyone besides the Brewers they should agree to trade for Prince Fielder so that there is always someone fatter than CC on the team.

Now that was funny. "his own locker room with buffet table" cracked me up.

Rumors are that the Brewers are offering 4 years $100M. I know the Yankees can match that, I don't understand anyone paying $25M a year for a pitcher. A-Rod makes $27M and he plays everyday.

Seriously tho the guy is talented but he is big and getting bigger. Any team team that signs him should try to get a weight clause or something in there to protect themselves. Union and his agent won't let it happen but def worth a try.

October 31, 2008  11:30 AM ET

i can only hope that he decides to come to the yanks but aside from being from cali. i also think the big fella has fell in love with the national league and the whole hitting thing. hopefully, he only sees $$ signs and wants his share of the big apple

The annual salary is there but I think he and his agents want more years. But if that is true not a bad offer from the Brewers. Def not a fake offer to tell the fans look we tried but he didn't take the offer so he is the bad guy not us.
