UCLA recruiting Bay Area & Hawaii
UCLA coaches will give the players today and Saturday off, using that time to visit recruits who could bring needed reinforcement next fall. "Big weekend for us," Coach Rick Neuheisel said. "We'll be out in earnest all day tomorrow and junior college recruiting on Saturday." Junior college transfers could be of immediate help, but it remains to be seen how much leeway the university will allow in terms of admissions. Defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker will be in the San Francisco Bay Area. Offensive coordinator Norm Chow will travel a little farther, flying to his native Hawaii. Coaches aren't allowed to discuss recruits, but rivals.com has reported that UCLA has oral commitments from running back Dalton Hilliard and receiver Roby Toma of Punahou High in Honolulu.

They should relax the rules on juco transfers for those players who look likely to be able to do the course work. Ucla ain't *that* difficult...

Manti Te'o.... He's between USC and BYU, the kid can flat out play. But more importantly, why is Rick leaving the second biggest talent hotbed (second to south florida)? I thought the monopoly was over.

The monoploly may stay intact for a couple of more years. And it's hard to "rank" recruiting hotbeds, especially within the Big Three: Cali, Texas, Fla. I think the fastest skill players are in FL , Cali possess great overall players, while Texas is usually known for QB's and lineman and better top-to-bottom talent.

This is really surprising... A coach that recruits in the same state that he's from AND the state that the team's school is in. Wierd. No wonder this made the cut as a story...

I would love the job of recruiting kids in Hawai'i.

What I meant is if a kid can pass his juco classes in a good light (e.g. 3.0 and above) then he should be able to handle Ucla course work. It's not as if football players take more than 12 hours a semester anyway.
