Bears' Grossman honing fundamentals

For now, the Bears have Rex Grossman. And not only will the spotlight double this year, but also the offense is changing. With Devin Hester moving to receiver, he and Bernard Berrian will provide so much speed that defenses will have to adjust. Greg Olsen, the first-round pick, adds a tight end who can catch. So Grossman will have options beyond his trademark heave-and-hope. More options, more speed. But that also means he has to be mature enough now to find those options, to run the offense more. Supposedly, he has spent the offseason working on fundamentals.

Rex needs to soldify his plans for opening a Chucky Cheese franchise in Jupiter, Florida.

June 22, 2007  11:32 AM ET

This guy will never buck up and lead this team. NEVER.
He can have as many options as he wants, but when it comes down to it, he just doesn't cut it

June 22, 2007  11:42 AM ET

He will not be QB at the end of the season i can gurennte it. He is too inconsistent. some game he is pretty good in others (4 INTs 0 TDs) Did you see how crappy he was in the cardinals game they only won it cause of D and Hester.

June 22, 2007  12:02 PM ET

Too bad the Bears aren't smart enough to trade Lance Briggs for a QB who isn't streaky like Grossman.

Hell maybe if Plummer could play someplace like Chicago he would reconsider retiring since it is a team that doesn't suck

June 22, 2007  12:05 PM ET

Gross WreckedMan working on fundamentals is news?Hey Rex try throwing the ball to the guy wearing the same colors.

June 22, 2007  12:05 PM ET

as you ...oops

June 22, 2007  12:39 PM ET

Whatever dudes. Give this guy a break, he did pretty good for only playing in one full season. Did you see the recent ESPN QBs with the "best" and "worst" weapons in the NFL? Well, Grossman had some of the worsts rated. I'm not saying he'll be one of the best QBs in the league but he'll be better than average and cut down on his "bad" games. Obviously he has talent considering he had roughly 10 good games last year, to 4 really bad ones and 2 mediocre. Hester, Olsen, Wolfe, and the emerging Bradley will make him better than last year.

June 22, 2007  01:02 PM ET

Give the guy a chance with some real weapons before you rag on him. Not everyone is Tom Brady, who can make bums look good.

June 22, 2007  01:07 PM ET

another spurrier qb

June 22, 2007  01:17 PM ET

Rex will be fine this year. You guys act like he should be the next P Manning or something. This was his first season, and he really didn't have anybody to throw it to last year. Half of you guys ripping on Rex have worse QB's than Rex AND crappy teams. Stop being haters.

June 22, 2007  01:21 PM ET

Note to retarded non-Bears fans...
Wake-Up.
Did one of your teams first year QB's ever lead you to the SuperBowl? No
Did your teams1st year QB throw 27 TD's his first year? No
Did your teams QB post over 7 100+ QB ratings last year? No

Ya he blew in the SuperBowl...but they would not have been in the SuperBowl if he didn't make a few throws in the playoff games against Seattle and the Saints.

Give the guy a chance. I guarantee Rex makes strides this year and the Bears have a top offense in the NFC.

And Tampa fan (aka TheGreat1)....who's your QB this year exactly? Maybe Gruden can bring back Brad Johnson because he's better than the bums trying to be your starter. I think a QB technically (cuts it) when they make the SuperBowl.

June 22, 2007  01:42 PM ET

I am a Bears fan, I grew up in Chicago, but I hate to tell you Packers Suck, that Rex Grossman does, in fact suck. I graduated from FSU and got to see him play a few times. He is truly a "system QB", as are almost ALL Spurrier bred QB's - Weurffel, Shane Mattews, etc. UF makes great college QB's, but they are rarely successful in the NFL. Check for yourself.

June 22, 2007  01:46 PM ET

he had to many chances hes just never going to be good. ever.

June 22, 2007  02:00 PM ET

Defenses will not have to adjust anything. Just concentrate on Grossman. Keep pressure on him and it doesn't matter what type of speed you have on the WR corp. He will throw it to one of your DBs.....INTERCEPTION......TOUCHDOWN!!!!

June 22, 2007  02:11 PM ET

I may be a retraded non-Bears fan but Rex Grossman still sucks. We had a guy like that in the 80's named Marc Wilson. You are in for some more torture this year. You don't have that soft schedule.

June 22, 2007  02:13 PM ET

he should have been working on fundamentals BEFORE he became a starter in the nfl.

the bears have one or two more years to get the super bowl win and they won't do it with Rex. sorry the guy is a slug. sure he had lots of TD's and wins but the bears won in spite of grossman, not because of him. he didn't win one game for them last year. the defense and the running game did. the only thing the guy can do is chuck it deep and pray that Berrian gets under it.

June 22, 2007  02:18 PM ET

It really is a simple mechanically fix. Just step up in the pocket when he throws. A lot of QBs have gone through this maturation process.

June 22, 2007  02:21 PM ET

Packers suck:

I'd take Jeff Garcia over Grossman any day of the week and twice on Sunday (pun intended). No way in hell was Grossman responsible for the Bears being in the Super Bowl. It was, as mentioned above, their defense and Devin Hester...that is, until Peyton Manning exposed their defense.

June 22, 2007  02:31 PM ET

Well, I think Grossman helped quite a bit in the Seahawks playoff win. See winning drive, plus a couple in regulation SafetyBlitz.

June 22, 2007  02:51 PM ET

Hey, give the guy a break. The world is full of bumbling incompetent fools, it's not like it's just him.
