Chiefs prepared for Johnson trade?

Now that Larry Johnson has publicly threatened to hold out if he doesn't receive his new contract, this issue looms as a major distraction. The Chiefs, anticipating the possibility that Johnson would walk out, offered him in trade in the spring but couldn't find a taker at their price. They also drafted another runner, Kolby Smith of Louisville. They have nobody else on their roster capable of providing what Johnson has. But they are hopeful that some combination of veteran Michael Bennett and Smith and perhaps even one of two younger players, Derrick Ross and Marcus O'Keith, can get the job done.

NOOOOOOO... i guess i better prepare myself for a rough season

June 22, 2007  11:42 AM ET

Better suffer for a few more years and take a run then be semo-respectable for years and really get no where. Draft picks, get some draft picks!!

June 22, 2007  11:49 AM ET

As good on the field as the guy is one has to figure he is a real cancer in the locker room if they won't sign him and can not find a trading partner.

June 22, 2007  12:15 PM ET

They will find a trading partner. The Texans would run (no pun intended) after him in a heartbeat. Given the connection with Houston's head coach, there is a good chance that LJ would welcome the trade. And if your KC, you figure that the Texans will have a top 10-15 draft pick next year, you will have a top 1-10 draft pick next year. If you can swing a trade for Houston's first rounder that would allow you to fill some big needs next year. Maybe move up and draft McFadden from Arkansas or if Slaton from West Virginia comes out early you could pick him up.

Green Bay FTW.

June 22, 2007  12:36 PM ET

he is the 2nd best back in the league, can the bengals have him for rudi and 2 convicks?

June 22, 2007  12:37 PM ET

Chiefs are playing cheap. If you have a guy like this, you have to keep him. Whatever it takes.

June 22, 2007  01:06 PM ET

Green Bay will never trade for him. They like good character players and he will never fall under that catagory.

June 22, 2007  01:20 PM ET

You don't HAVE to have a great back to win. Look at the Steelers for example. Who even heard of Willie Parker until he started in place of an injured Bettis? Now he has a Super Bowl ring. Granted he has talent, but that shows you don't need a major back. They could trade him and have TWO #1 picks next year. That would fill the running back and cornerback situations easy.

June 22, 2007  01:32 PM ET

the only way i would trade him is for 2 first round picks

June 22, 2007  01:37 PM ET

Nobody will give that much. Problem is that you also have LT's backup Michael Turner being a FA next year and available for nothing. The Chargers could have gotten SOMETHING if they hadn't over-priced him. LJ could draw a first, third and maybe a player. Think maybe a sign and trade deal for a 1st round pick, Ahman Green or (what is Texans backup HB name?) and maybe a 3rd or 4th round pick. That would be alot.

June 22, 2007  01:58 PM ET

Stupid! Pay the man!!! If they trade him you Chiefs Fans should boycott the games.

June 22, 2007  02:34 PM ET

I talked too much about LJ on yesterdays thread, and I'm getting tired of always being right. I don't think KC will get a 1 rounder for him, and he's not even close to the 2nd best running back in the league.

Watch for a team to overpay for him, and for him to fade into obscurity behind an average line.

June 22, 2007  02:46 PM ET

He will go for a 1st rounder based on his performance in the past.

When I think of the BEST running back right now I think of

#1. LT
#2. LJ
#3. Duece McCallister (don't give me Reggie Bush...he wasn't even the best performing running back drafted last year. Addai from the Colts had a better year...and also played in a two-back system)
#4. Stephen Jackson from St. Louis...problem is that he is underutilized for the most part but will see more action this year.
#5. Shaun Alexander
#6. Clinton Portis (when he isn't hurt)
#7. Brian Westbrook---to much of a multiple threat not to be in the top 10
#8. Willie Parker
#9. Maroney--Pats will have to see if he can do it alone this year.
#10. Willis Mcahee

June 22, 2007  02:52 PM ET

That is a good point...I forgot about Gore. I would place him at #9 and push Maroney down to #10 f/b Mcahee @ #11. Totally forgot about Gore and he has played really, really well since being picked up by SF

June 22, 2007  02:53 PM ET

Yeah, really. And I'm sorry but LJ isn't the second best back in the league. He's just the guy that gets twice as many carries as anyone else.

June 22, 2007  02:56 PM ET

I might even flip Parker and Gore. Statistically they were close last year. Though the edge in TD's go to Parker.

June 22, 2007  02:57 PM ET

The highest that KC will get for him is a 2nd round pick, and that is a maybe, if he continues to get the amount of carries as he did last year, he won't be in the league for very long. I say trade him, get what you can get now, and build for the future, because your QB is not going to get you far this year.

June 22, 2007  02:57 PM ET

But if you can get twice and many carries, stay healthy and perform, then you become the best back. See Emmitt Smith. They consider him the best back ever now (statistically the best) since he beat Walter's mark, but he is nowhere near the best back in football.

June 22, 2007  02:58 PM ET

Like I said Viju, given the connection between LJ and the Texans staff...he might go there.
