Cubs, Sox seek speedy leadoff hitter

The Cubs and White Sox reached the playoffs, but October only exposed their most glaring needs. For the Cubs, that is a speedy leadoff hitter, preferably one who's a switch hitter or bats left-handed -- anything that would allow them to move Alfonso Soriano out of the top spot. The same need exists for the White Sox, who know they're guaranteed one major acquisition this offseason -- a healthy Carlos Quentin -- but also realize they won't go anywhere with the same slow, plodding lineup.

How 'bout some Coco Crisp for breakfast, Cubbies?

October 31, 2008  08:13 AM ET

Boy, is anyone else shocked that the Scott Posednik experiment failed like the effin Maginot Line?

October 31, 2008  08:41 AM ET

pretty sure it won them a world series

The Sox should trade for Chone Figgins, he's Scotty Pods with talent

October 31, 2008  08:57 AM ET

Let me be the first to start the Brian Roberts to the Cubs rumor. You know it's coming.

October 31, 2008  09:13 AM ET

I say we seek Manny and move him to right field.

October 31, 2008  09:21 AM ET

Hope the Sox get Figgins. May be they can trade Konreko to the Angels and get Figgins and some pitching?

The Cubs will never move Soriano out of the leadoff spot. They don't have the balls to drop him down in the order.

Muck Fone Chiggins.

Won't Soriano start pouting again if they move him out of the leadoff spot.

CF2 - you're right - I was listening to Chicago sports radio this morning, and they were already talking about Brian Roberts.

The Cubs need a leader--they have several good players, but none of them take any responsibility. I hate Derek Jeter, but the Cubs need someone like that. The most mature player on the team last year was probably Geo Soto, their rookie catcher--that really says something. Someone needs to be brought in, or else someone needs to step up and make these clowns play with some heart.

what happened to to brian roberts going to the cubs. he'd be a good fit for the cubbies

Brian Roberts again? do they cubs want to create prob;lem by really getting this guy? It must be a long shot if that..........Can`t see the cubs investing in him......

why not b. roberts? i don't know his contract situation or anything but from wish list perspective i'd think he'd be right at the top to fill the needs they mentioned above

sssshhhhh, Al .... we like to let Grossedout think he sounds intelligent.

October 31, 2008  10:48 AM ET

they accomplished their goal of winning a world series by playing small ball. I'd say a good way to judge a trade is if it wins you a world series, and he was an integral part in that. Pods isn't young, and wasn't young when they acquired him, they knew he was short term. Don't talk like you know anything. Think more, post less. jackass.

Why cant the Cubs develop a d@m speedy leadoff hitter? They are turning into the Natil Leagues version of the Yankees. "lets just go buy what we need since we cant develop it ourselves."

And just imagine if Cuban does buy the team. Cubs will be the first team with a $300M payroll.
