Rodgers making Romo money

Flush with almost a $20 million surplus beneath the National Football League salary cap, the Green Bay Packers used up a sizable chunk of it Friday by signing quarterback Aaron Rodgers to a five-year extension through the 2014 season. Citing a league source, the NFL Network reported that the contract was worth $65 million over six years, with $20 million guaranteed. "It's certainly a market deal compared to other franchise quarterbacks," said David Dunn, Rodgers' agent for the last few months. "The Packers came at us aggressively for this to be a deal that is commensurate with his peers in the league. Because Aaron likes it so much there, it became an easy decision for him." "We think this is a good long-term investment for the organization," general manager Ted Thompson said. "We're looking at it from a longer view rather than just the last two months. We think he will continue to develop in his craft." The deal was patterned after those signed by Dallas quarterback Tony Romo almost a year ago to the day and another signed by Jacksonville quarterback David Garrard in April. Romo had made 17 starts by last Oct. 30 when he signed a six-year extension worth $67.5 million nine days into the Cowboys' off week. His contract contained $30 million in guarantees. Garrard, 30 at the time, had made merely 30 starts in six seasons before he signed a six-year, $57.95 million extension with $18 million in guarantees.

No doubt the Pack believe Rodgers is the future in Green Bay. After all, they bid a less than fond farewell to their franchise icon to get Aaron his starting job.

Seems a little early for that kind of money.

GB either overspent this year, or is building for the future. just depends what their RB and QB are doing for the next 3-4 seasons.

November 1, 2008  11:03 AM ET

He has been on the team for years. They know what he can and cannot do. Good move on their part. They have the money under the cap right now and there is NO QB who might be out there that anyone could go after in the next two years.....And no one wants to start over with a rookie.....

November 1, 2008  11:10 AM ET

Well according to Jerry Jones there will be no cap in 2011 i think ( and he hopes), plus Aaron Rodgers, in my mind, is very injurie pron, if there really is such a thing.

November 1, 2008  11:12 AM ET

yep and they both have the same number of playoff wins.

November 1, 2008  11:13 AM ET

I think Rodgers is a good QB, hopefully it will work out for the Packers.

November 1, 2008  11:15 AM ET

the packers need him to do well after tha Favre fiasco.

Might as well, he blows just like Romo!

cowboyfan...I do not see the other owners signing a contract with the Union that does not have a cap. They know they would self destruct. The players want it gone, but the league cannot survive without one. My opinion. The cap and how it is determined may change, i.e. you may be able to have a soft cap on players you drafted and then resign. That would be fair..But hard cap money counted on free agents from other teams...Will be interesting. I see a work stoppage just like in the 80s.

I hope there wont be any work stopage, but we will have to wait and see. The one thing going for the NFL is that is it a buisness that is thriving right now.
