With Jim Mora out of the picture, rumors will shift focus to other candidates. One of the leading candidates could be Missouri coach Gary Pinkel, a former UW assistant under Don James. Pinkel declined to comment on the UW job this week when asked by reporters in Missouri. Other possible candidates include Pat Hill of Fresno State, Chris Petersen of Boise State, former Baltimore Ravens coach Brian Billick, Utah's Kyle Whittingham, TCU's Gary Patterson, California's Jeff Tedford, Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp, Missouri offensive coordinator Dave Christensen, UCLA defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker, former Raiders coach Lane Kiffin, USC offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian, Texas Tech coach Mike Leach and Air Force coach Troy Calhoun.

Recently Pinkel blamed his team for their 2 losses, (headline) Coach Pinkel blames Missouri's slump on lack of focus. That is like a teacher who blames the class for not understanding something and talks slower and louder to teach that idea the next time. Mizzou has a good team, but is not an elite team that can play against tough competition. That is because Pinkel is a good coach, but certainly not an elite one. Blaming the team for his lack of coaching is unimpressive.

Missouri would hate to lose this guy. But how smart can he be if he thinks UW is a more elite program than the MU he has molded. Christiansen would be a big loss too. Come on Huskies, why not pick a west coast guy!

all the head coaches mentioned in this are at much better football programs than UW. The only ones that I can maybe see leaving are Pederson, Patterson, and Hill. This would be so they can be in a BCS conference. A weak one at that, and could maybe turn this team into a Rose Bowl contender in 2 or 3 years.

So who aren't they looking at?

Your first sentence is delusional. UW is as elite of a program anywhere and a great job to get. No matter what direction UW goes they need to get this one right. They can ill afford another bad hire at this juncture and I hope they can get back on track. It'll be interesting who gets the gig.

The coaches mentioned are at RIGHT NOW better programs. Bottom line is, UW has as many wins as the school i go to (and Hartford doesn't have a football team) and they've been close in just two games. I think Kiffin RIGHT NOW are atis the best, and most realistic hire.

He might be an elite coach if he gets to an elite program - one with more history and tradition than Mizzou. He's done a helluva job with Mizzou and could likely turn the Huskies fortunes around. I'd think Missouri would hate to lose this guy.

Was Va Tech an elite program before Frank Boemer got there? No, Boemer made a program with no tradition a great program and took them a national title game. There is no reason that Pinkel can't do the same with MU.

November 1, 2008  06:10 PM ET

Pinkel has turned around a perennially mediocre team, Missouri, and turned it into a contender in a BCS conference. Why on earth would he want to go to a team that hasn't won a game this year? Unless Washington pays him an unprecendented millions in compensation, Pinkel would be a fool to make that move.

Missouri used to be very competitive and had many good seasons back in the day. Three, maybe four years ago Pinkel was on the hot seat and his job was on the line. I bet Missouri is glad now they didn't fire him.

The thing is, Missouri has a strong fan base, even in their lean years they continued to draw good crowds. They also have a strong, instate recruiting base and are the only D1 football program in Missouri. In recent years they've managed to get a lot of those kids to stay home and go to Missouri rather than Nebraska and various Big 10 schools. If Pinkel stays where he's at; he might be the foundation for a football dynasty.

I believe UW is a more prestigious school but it will be an uphill battle to return that program to the glory days of the late '80s and early '90s. He does have history with UW and the scenery is absolutely bedazzling relative to Columbia but strictly from a career perspective it'd be tough to walk away from Missouri after all the hard work he's done there, just when he's beginning to see the fruits of his labor.

That may have been the most objective sentiments I've ever written. I can't stand Missouri and graduated from KU! I was quite thrilled to see their dreams dashed at home against OSU and again a week later when UT spanked them... There, that's better!

@ Helen from Keller,
"He might be an elite coach if he gets to an elite program - one with more history and tradition than Mizzou."

What kind of a comment is this? Are you aware at ALL of MIZZOU's history/tradition? If not then don't comment on it.

As for the Huskies, they have LESS history/tradition than the Oregon teams (Beavers/Ducks).

Going to UW wouldn't be a very smart move for Pinkel even if they DO offer him lots of $$$.

November 1, 2008  07:37 PM ET

Your right God King... I forgot all those National Championships those Oregon schools have... way more than UW. Idiot.

November 1, 2008  09:06 PM ET

I think he needs to go while he can and get more money because the big bad tigers aren't as big and bad as they think they are and today showed that. You even might say they suck.

November 1, 2008  11:04 PM ET

Maaaannnnn, I smell something leaving Missouri.

Who is it and where it's going? I haven't smelled it yet.

November 1, 2008  11:56 PM ET

I don't know if Pinkel will go to UW or not, or if they'll even ask him.

That being said...anyone who thinks UW isn't a great opportunity or that they don't have tons of tradition and potential just hasn't been familiar with college football for very long. UW has had some crappy seasons and fallen to an all time low recently, but it has an incredible upside. The program has been elite and even won it all before and with the right coach will do so again.

Some of you really have no idea what you are talking about when it comes to UW and should maybe take a few minutes to do some research before you claim UW is not one of the nations most prestigious college football programs. How about second all time in the PAC-10 for wins and adding a National Championship, not to mention a bevy of Rose Bowls to the resume. Yeah but the program is not worth coaching at. Oh and did I mention UW is in the top ten in the NCAA for revenue each and every year, win or lose?

November 2, 2008  09:37 AM ET

Pinkel is a smart guy.

Right now, he has more in place that UW has.

Not just several 5-star recuirts - they come and go. But look at the fan support.

Pinkel is sitting in a situation where he's just as good or better than anyone in the Big 12 north. And coming from a Husker fan, that's saying a lot.

He's got a good a shot at playing in the Big 12 conference title game in the next three years as anyone. I with my Huskers could say the same.

November 2, 2008  09:39 AM ET

Bottom line, you're talking about trying to coax a guy to leave a situation, and go to a inferior position, and build again.

This MIGHT be appealing to a guy who's accepted challenges every time... Maybe...
