The Yankees have been very aggressive in calling teams to see who might be available. They called the Astros about Roy Oswalt and Lance Berkman and were told they were not going to be dealt.

This an early sign that the Yankees are going to break the 250 million mark in salaries this coming season. Baseball is becoming really sad!!! Yeah, I know Tampa but big market teams with alot of money are always on the top and the bottom teams get a chance once every 5-10 years.

Gotta love this site... you take something as simple as they Yankees making a phone call and it's a story. Isn't that what teams with good management are supposed to do? The 'Stros won't trade those guys anyway without being overwhelmed...

first of all- why is it sad?
as the recent history of the Yankees show.......
Money & payroll does not = championships
it is well within the rules to spend AS MUCH as you want

And as far as bottom feeders....
if they had good management - like say the twins-
they would be better.........and ps- they COULD spend
if they wanted to - they simply don't

Im sure the Rockies have been called as well.

November 2, 2008  09:49 AM ET

Could you imagine Oswalt in New York City? Really now folks...

November 2, 2008  10:07 AM ET

if the Yankees had actually picked up one of those guys it would have been a miracle

Morning AllStarz, I totally agree with you. It is unfortunate that the large market teams (I hope Philly starts acting like the 4th largest market to perpetuate the good thing they've got going now but I digress....) always have two options 1.) farm system 2.) the open market whereas the small market towns only have the former and only rarely the latter. Can anyonwe really outbid the Yanks if FrankenSteiny wants to make it rain in the Gotham City? I think not.

November 2, 2008  11:17 AM ET

Why not ask? Both are potential HOF players. Any team would love to have them. I'm not sure what we would do with Berkman; but, I'd love to try and find a spot for him.

Oswalt looks like he wants to hear Grossedout squeel like a pig.

November 2, 2008  11:22 AM ET

I heard the Hank and his Yanks called Nolan Ryan and Stan Musial to see if they were available as well... I hear they offered them both new hips.....

Yanks are a joke.... when will they learn that they can not buy chemistry....

November 2, 2008  11:26 AM ET

Maybe Randy Johnson or Tom Glavine is available WAnkies!! Good thing The Yanks didn't trade for Santana. He needs another ten years of seasoning before he's ready for the Bronx.

Watch for them to be traded later this offseason to a differnt team

November 2, 2008  12:30 PM ET

Tampa Bay will be great next season, but after that when all the contracts come off the book they're done. The Twins are the real young uprising team to watch after that.
