Red Sox interested in Fielder?

The perception of a few baseball officials is that the Red Sox' priority is to come up with a catcher, whether it's bringing back Jason Varitek or going another route. One scout said, "They'll try to take care of the catching first and then see what's out there and explore a guy like [Mark] Teixeira or [Jake] Peavy or [CC] Sabathia or [A.J.] Burnett. They might even explore Prince Fielder because they know the Yankees will. But think about it; they don't have to do a whole lot. They came within a game of going to the World Series."

They do have some work to do, and it goes beyond the catcher (my gosh, Jason Varitek looked feeble in that final ALCS game...). Big Papi isn't what he used to be, and their pitching staff didn't look nearly as unhittable as they did in the prior season or two. They're a good team, but to imply they can sit tight and do nothing isn't telling the whole story.

GOOT LAWD! Look at dat picture. Dat boy is phat!

(Sorry about the unoriginal Prince Fielder is fat post. It is early. But still...my God...two or three more veggie pizzas and he could be pushing 400 lbs).

When will the Yanks and Sox learn? It doesn't matter how many bats you add, because they both have bats, it's about pitching stupid! The Yanks stayed in the race because Mussina had a great year and couldn't get over the hump because Wang was hurt the entire year. The Sox lost to the Rays because Beckett and Lester didn't win big games. It was true yesterday, it's true today and will be true tomorrow, it's about PITCHING. My beloved Phils won not because of our sluggers, but because of our starters, bullpen and LIGHTS OUT LIDGE!

"the Red Sox' priority is to come up with a catcher"

I really don't see why this is such a 'priority'
with the sox's line-up....all they need is a decent
defensive catcher- not Johnny Bench

November 2, 2008  09:14 AM ET

I dont see that happening. Milwakuee is going to want a top tier starting pitcher in return. I could see San Francisco trading Matt Cain to Milwakuee for Fielder, it makes sense for both teams. The Brewers would still have a good affense and would get a pticher to replace Sheets and Sabathia.

November 2, 2008  10:17 AM ET

why are the red sox trying to be the yankees by throwing around big bucks for players like texeira. the only difference between the yanks and the sox is that the red sox (for some stupid reason i dont know of) are going after players that they dont NEED AT ALL. WAKE UP THEO YOUR TEAM HAS YOOUUUUUUK AT FIRST YOU DONT NEED FEILDER OR TEXIERA GO GET A CATCHER OR A PITCHER. WHY ARE YOU TRYING TO REPLACE THE BEST FEILDING FIRST BASEMAN IN THE AMERICAN LEAGUE!!!!!!!!!!

November 2, 2008  10:27 AM ET

Who are the Red Sox and the Yankees NOT interested in? Shhhhhhhheeeeesssssssshhhhh!!!

November 2, 2008  11:20 AM ET

When will you learn the sox have pitching they have Beckett Lester and Dice K along with 3 or 4 other guys in the minors that could come up and start. Ever since Manny got his trade to get out of Boston then the Red Sox had a big hole that they need to fix in the lineup. So for the Sox they need one fourth pitcher and they need 1 or 2 more big bats...

November 2, 2008  12:37 PM ET

he would be a great fall back option if the sox can't get tex

They may want to think about a 1st baseman, like Texeria, because Ortiz could still be a problem with his wrist. Keeping Ortiz as the DH would be great, but they need more then just a catcher.

they can have ramon hernandez

November 2, 2008  02:44 PM ET

The Red Sox priority is to get a young catcher who can be the starter in the majors in 1 or 2 years and to try to get another big bat in the middle of the lineup that can take pressure off of Ortiz and IF they could get Tex then they IF they had to he could play left field for one year he is not that bad at defence so we could keep lowell wind up trading bay for some prospects to help the farm system some more or trade him with some prospects for another starting pitcher.

November 2, 2008  02:46 PM ET

As for Prince if the Sox can't get Tex then they could try for Prince and wind up moving Youk to 3rd having Prince at 1st and package a deal around lowell
